Poznań’s Nowe Zoo (New Zoo) is celebrating its 50th anniversary this October with an exciting weekend full of events. Since opening in 1974, the Zoo has been a place where visitors can enjoy a day immersed in nature while learning about wildlife and conservation. This 26-27 October, the Zoo is going all out with a special programme designed to celebrate this milestone, offering something for everyone – from animal lovers to families looking for a fun day out.
A Journey Through the Zoo’s History
Nowe Zoo (New Zoo), located on the beautiful, forested hills near Malta in Poznań, has grown significantly since its opening. Built as an expansion of the Stare Zoo (Old Zoo) in the city centre, it opened its gates in 1974, starting with a modest collection of animals. Today, it spans over 121 hectares, making it one of the largest zoos in Poland. The Zoo has continually developed, with modern enclosures that mimic the natural habitats of its residents. Visitors can explore various ecosystems, including exhibits for large mammals, birds of prey, and endangered species like the Grevy’s zebra and Rothschild giraffe.
Weekend Programme of Exciting Events
The highlight of the anniversary celebrations is a series of special animal feedings and talks, which offer an opportunity to learn more about the Zoo’s diverse residents. Additionally, every visitor who purchases a ticket at the Zoo’s entrance will receive a limited-edition commemorative postcard designed especially for the 50th anniversary, making for a memorable keepsake of the celebration.
Below is the full schedule of events for the weekend:
- 10:00 – Watch the Patagonian conures at the Parrot House.
- 10:30 – Meet the lemurs at the Night Animal Pavilion Aviary.
- 11:00 – Learn about the tigers at the Tiger House.
- 12:30 – See the Japanese macaques at their island.
- 13:00 – Meet the pygmy ducks and crested birds at the Animal Kindergarten.
- 13:30 – Visit the red pandas at their enclosure.
- 14:00 – Check out the anteaters at the Anteater House.
- 15:00 – Wrap up the day with the giraffes and rhinos at the Giraffe and Rhino House.
During these feeding sessions, zookeepers will not only provide food for the animals but also share fascinating information about their diets, behaviours, and conservation status.
Join the Anniversary Treasure Hunt
One of the most exciting activities planned for the weekend is a special treasure hunt across the Zoo’s grounds. Teresa Płonka, a long-time supporter of New Zoo, has hand-painted 150 stones, each featuring the image of an animal from the Zoo. Visitors are invited to search for these hidden treasures during their visit.
If you find one of these stones, it’s yours to keep! Be sure to share your discovery on social media using the hashtag #kamyki (meaning “stones” in Polish), and tag Poznań Zoo. This fun activity is a great way to engage with the Zoo’s community and bring a bit of the Zoo’s joy home with you.
Anniversary Train Rides and Educational Talks
For those curious about the Zoo’s history and its conservation work, special train rides will be available throughout the weekend. These guided tours, departing at 12:00, 13:00, 14:00, and 15:00, will take visitors around the Zoo while an expert from the Zoo’s education team shares stories about its evolution over the past 50 years, its animal residents, and the importance of modern zoos in wildlife conservation.
More to Explore at New Zoo
In addition to the weekend’s special events, there is plenty more to explore at New Zoo. With its vast natural landscapes, the Zoo offers a peaceful and educational escape into the world of animals. Visitors can meet a variety of species, from African elephants to Siberian tigers, and enjoy exhibits that showcase endangered species like the red panda and the Rothschild giraffe.
New Zoo also runs year-round educational programmes aimed at teaching visitors about conservation and the importance of protecting endangered species. Whether you’re participating in a workshop or simply watching the animals in their enclosures, there’s always something new to learn.
