A European Weekend That Starts on the Road

Frankfurt (Oder): The Easiest Border Escape
Frankfurt (Oder) is the simplest international drive from Poznań, taking roughly one hour and 40 minutes in good conditions.
The centre is compact. Walk along the Oder, visit St Mary’s Church and its medieval stained-glass windows, then continue to the Kleist Museum, dedicated to writer Heinrich von Kleist.
Frankfurt works well as a day trip. A river walk, one cultural stop and dinner are enough to fill the afternoon without rushing. The bridge towards Słubice also gives the city a clear cross-border character.
Bad Saarow: Thermal Baths by the Lake
Bad Saarow is around two hours from Poznań and suits travellers who want a quiet break rather than a packed sightseeing plan.
The town stands beside Scharmützelsee. Its main attraction is SaarowTherme, with thermal brine pools, saunas and wellness facilities. The Kurpark and lakeside promenade are nearby, so a spa visit can easily be combined with a walk by the water.
Summer brings swimming, cycling and boat trips. In colder months, the thermal pools become the main reason to visit. One night works for a quick reset; two nights make the journey feel more relaxed.
Eisenhüttenstadt: Architecture and East German History
Eisenhüttenstadt is roughly two hours from Poznań. It is not a postcard city, but it offers something more unusual.
Built as a planned industrial city in the former East Germany, its central districts have broad streets, green courtyards and carefully designed residential buildings. The city is best explored on foot, with attention to the architecture rather than a list of famous monuments.

Berlin: A Full Weekend, Not a Day Trip
Berlin sits at the edge of the driving limit. The fastest estimates are close to two and a half hours, but traffic can push the journey towards three hours or more. Plan at least two nights.
Do not try to see the whole city. For a first visit, combine the Brandenburg Gate, Museum Island and the Berlin Wall Memorial. Another route could include the East Side Gallery, Kreuzberg and Friedrichshain.
Parking is often more trouble than it is worth. Book accommodation with a parking space, leave the car there and use public transport. Berlin requires more planning, but it offers the widest choice of museums, restaurants and nightlife.
Europe in Under Two Hours by Plane
For a bigger change of scenery, direct flights from Poznań reach Copenhagen in about one hour and 15 minutes, Amsterdam in around one hour and 40 minutes, and Zurich in about one hour and 50 minutes.
The full journey is longer once security and airport transfers are included, but each city works well for a two- or three-night break.
Copenhagen: Harbour Views and Neighbourhood Food
Copenhagen is compact and easy to explore over a weekend. Start at Nyhavn, then walk towards Christianshavn, Rosenborg Castle or one of the city’s food halls.
Nørrebro is a good area for casual restaurants and bakeries, while Vesterbro offers cafés and bars. The city is expensive, so booking accommodation early and choosing a few priorities will help control the budget.
Amsterdam: Museums and Canal Walks
Amsterdam combines major museums with streets that are best explored without a plan.
Book early for the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum or Anne Frank House. Between visits, walk through the Jordaan, have lunch in De Pijp or take a free ferry across the IJ. Early mornings are best for quieter canal views before the centre becomes crowded.
Zurich: Old Town and Lake Zurich
Zurich is the most expensive option, but it is also the calmest.
The Old Town lies on both sides of the Limmat, with narrow streets, churches and small squares. Follow the river to Lake Zurich for an easy waterfront walk. On clear days, the Alps are visible beyond the city.
