Biedronka Reduces Plastic Use by 55 Tonnes with New Meat Packaging

Biedronka, the largest retail chain in Poland, has made a significant stride towards sustainability by introducing 100% cellulose absorbers in its meat products. This initiative is set to reduce plastic waste by 55 tonnes annually, reflecting the chain’s commitment to environmental stewardship and innovation in packaging.

A Revolutionary Move in Meat Packaging

Biedronka’s initiative to use cellulose absorbers in meat packaging is groundbreaking in the European retail sector. These absorbers, made entirely from responsibly sourced cellulose, are designed to enhance the freshness and longevity of meat products. This not only reduces plastic waste but also ensures higher quality and safety for consumers.

As the first major retailer in Europe to implement such an innovative solution, Biedronka sets a high standard for sustainability. The absorbers, known as Cellsorb Paper Pads, effectively absorb moisture and gases from meat, preventing spoilage and maintaining freshness.

Environmental Impact and Sustainability

The shift to cellulose absorbers is a major environmental win, cutting down plastic usage by 55 tonnes each year. This reduction significantly decreases the carbon footprint associated with plastic production and disposal, contributing to a cleaner environment.

The cellulose used in the absorbers is certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC®), ensuring it comes from sustainably managed forests. This certification underscores Biedronka’s commitment to responsible sourcing and environmental conservation.

Extensive Testing and Implementation

Before rolling out the new absorbers, Biedronka conducted extensive storage and process tests. These tests involved collaboration with producers, fresh meat suppliers, and internal teams to ensure the absorbers met all necessary standards and requirements.

In early 2024, Biedronka implemented the new absorbers across all its Kraina Mięs pork products packaged in VACUUM technology. This large-scale adoption marks a significant step in the company’s journey towards more sustainable packaging solutions.

We want to transform the packaging industry to be more environmentally friendly, and cellulose absorbers are an important step in this direction. Our ambition is to transition 100% of our products that require absorbent inserts to cellulose-based absorbers, in order to achieve our goal of eliminating unnecessary plastic wherever possible.

Recognition and Awards

Biedronka’s efforts have not gone unnoticed. The company recently won the 18th edition of the “ESG Ranking. Responsible Management” in the trade category. This prestigious award highlights Biedronka’s leadership in environmental, social, and governance (ESG) practices.

In addition to the ESG Ranking, Biedronka received the Golden Leaf ESG award in the 13th edition of the ESG Leaves by Tygodnik Polityka. This accolade is awarded to companies that adhere to the highest standards of local and global management practices and regularly report their non-financial achievements.

Biedronka and Too Good To Go: A Partnership for Sustainability

Biedronka’s commitment to sustainability extends beyond reducing plastic waste. The retailer has also partnered with Too Good To Go, a social impact company focused on reducing food waste. Through this collaboration, Biedronka has helped save 1.5 million Surprise Packages, preventing 4,300 tonnes of CO2e emissions. This partnership not only supports environmental sustainability but also offers significant savings to consumers, further enhancing Biedronka’s reputation as a leader in eco-friendly practices.

Future Goals and Ambitions

Biedronka aims to transition all products requiring absorbent inserts to cellulose-based absorbers. This goal is part of a broader strategy to eliminate unnecessary plastic wherever possible, aligning with the company’s sustainability objectives.

Biedronka is committed to continuously improving its packaging solutions to reduce environmental impact. The introduction of cellulose absorbers is just one of many steps the company plans to take towards a more sustainable future.

Biedronka’s introduction of 100% cellulose absorbers in meat packaging is a pioneering move in the European retail market. By significantly reducing plastic waste, the company not only enhances the freshness and quality of its products but also sets a benchmark for sustainable practices in the industry. Biedronka’s ongoing commitment to innovation and environmental responsibility ensures it will remain a leader in the field of sustainable retail.
