A new McDonald’s restaurant is taking shape at the historical heart of Poznań. The restaurant is planned for Stary Rynek 87/88, in premises previously occupied by club Bee Jay’s.
Work on the historic buildings has been progressing, while the restaurant’s distinctive branding has already appeared on the façade. However, an official opening date has not yet been announced.
A new restaurant in a historic setting
The two connected buildings at Stary Rynek 87/88 have a long history. They were associated with Hermann Loevy, who acquired the two properties in 1905 and established a department store there. Historical records describe it as the first department store in Poznań devoted entirely to retail.
Today, the buildings are being adapted for gastronomic use, bringing a very recognisable international brand into the centre of Poznań's historic Old Town.
The location is within the Park Kulturowy Stare Miasto, meaning that changes to shopfronts, advertising and signage are subject to specific conservation rules. That is particularly noticeable in the case of McDonald’s. Rather than the large illuminated signs commonly associated with the chain, the approved sign for Stary Rynek is a much more restrained design, using gold metalwork with subtle illumination. The sign has already been installed on the building.
Opening date remains unconfirmed
There is currently no confirmed public opening date for the restaurant. However, job advertisements for positions at the new Stary Rynek location have been appearing recently, suggesting that preparations are moving closer to the opening stage. The recruitment material suggests the restaurant may be opening soon, but neither the listings nor the company have announced a specific date yet.
A new addition to a changing Stary Rynek
Stary Rynek has been undergoing significant changes in recent years, with the renovation of the square, the City Hall, new restaurants and cafés opening as well as continued efforts to revitalise the Old Town district.
The arrival of the new McDonald’s has also prompted discussion about what type of businesses are appropriate for one of Poznań’s most historic public spaces. Some local voices have questioned whether an international fast-food chain fits the character of Stary Rynek, while others have pointed to the practical role such a restaurant could play for visitors and the wider centre.
For now, the construction and recruitment activity suggest that the opening is getting closer. The exact date, along with details of the restaurant’s facilities and opening hours, have not yet been announced.
