Open City International Theatre: A New Chapter for English-Language Theatre in Poznań

Poznań’s English-speaking theatre scene stepped into an exciting new era in 2025 when Poznań English Theatre and Nomads Theatre joined forces to create Open City International Theatre. Both groups had spent years building a loyal audience, nurturing similar artistic values and championing the same mission. The merger felt like a natural next step, a way to strengthen what they had already built and to open the door to an even wider international and local community.

A Confident First Step: “Being Human”

Their first joint production, Being Human, premiered in June 2025 and immediately set the tone for what this new collective aims to achieve. Audiences welcomed it warmly and the performance proved that Open City International Theater had not only found its voice but also its momentum.

A Truly International Ensemble

Open City brings together artists from many parts of the world. Performers and creatives come from the United States, Ukraine, Belarus, Poland, India, Turkey and Brazil, along with several other countries. What connects them is a shared belief that, no matter where people come from, we care deeply about the same universal themes: love, freedom, fear and belonging.

Their work creates a rare and needed meeting place in Poznań. It is a space where non-Polish speakers can take part in theatre as fully as local audiences, and where stories are shaped by many different cultures working side by side.

New Premiere: “Not My Life”

The company’s next production is the upcoming premiere of Not My Life, a story that follows a young woman who realises she has been living a life chosen by everyone except herself. As the play unfolds, the life she has built and the life she longs for begin to push against each other. The result is a story that feels instantly recognisable, something many people can see reflected in their own experiences at one point or another.
