Holiday Joy Spreads Across Poznań’s Christmas Markets in 2024

As winter settles over Poznań, the city’s heart begins to glow with the warmth of the annual Christmas markets, inviting locals and tourists alike to immerse themselves in the holiday cheer. This year, three bustling Christmas villages will open across Poznań, bringing new and traditional attractions that celebrate the spirit of the season. With festive markets on Plac Wolności, at the Międzynarodowe Targi Poznańskie (MTP), and for the first time in years, at the beautifully renovated Old Market Square, this season promises magical experiences for all ages.

Three Festive Locations

Poznań’s Christmas markets open on Saturday, 16 November, with a spectacular debut on Plac Wolności at 18:00, while the MTP market will follow with its own grand opening on Sunday, featuring live music and the lighting of a massive Christmas tree.

  • Plac Wolności: Lasting until 6 January 2025, this 52-day celebration is the longest-running of Poznań’s Christmas markets. A mix of local and international vendors will offer handcrafted decorations, unique holiday gifts, and global culinary treats. Visitors can find everything from Polish sweets to mulled wine and hearty dishes from various cuisines. Anna Dorna, one of the organisers, encourages families to come for special promotions, including “Family Wednesdays” and “Student Thursdays”.

“We want to create a place where all of Poznań can feel at home and celebrate together.”

Says Anna Dorna.
  • Międzynarodowe Targi Poznańskie (MTP): Running from 16 November to 31 December, the MTP market is known for its large-scale attractions. This year, visitors can ride a giant Ferris wheel, visit Santa’s Cottage, and enjoy live performances, including local singer Mezo at the grand opening. The MTP will also host a New Year’s Eve celebration, marking a return to large-scale festivities with live music and fireworks.

  • Old Market Square: The historic Old Market Square will join the festivities from 23 November. A whimsical 19th-century Venetian carousel will add even more nostalgia, along with the much-anticipated return of the Poznań Ice Festival. For the first time, this market will feature a 400-square-metre ice rink, providing a charming skating experience in the shadow of the city’s iconic town hall.

“This ice rink is a unique addition this year. With its stunning view of the town hall, it’s sure to be a hit among visitors.”

Says Jędrzej Solarski, Deputy Mayor of Poznań.

Poznań Ice Festival: Sculpting Winter Magic

Taking place from 6 to 8 December, the Poznań Ice Festival brings renowned ice sculptors to the Old Market Square for a weekend of frozen artistry. The event kicks off with a small sculpture competition, followed by a thrilling Speed Ice Carving contest, and culminates in the Main Competition on Sunday. This year’s 18th edition promises captivating scenes as sculptors transform blocks of ice into intricate works of art. Children can join workshops to learn ice sculpting skills, adding a family-friendly element to this beloved tradition.

“The Ice Festival is a highlight for everyone, and we’re delighted to bring it back to its original location on Old Market Square.”

Says Monika Wygachiewicz from Estrada Poznańska.

Holiday Illuminations Across the City

Poznań’s streets and squares will be adorned with festive lights and decorations inspired by the “Poznań Legend Trail for Children.” This year’s displays include special QR codes that lead visitors to charming legends tied to each illuminated spot. Main streets and neighbourhoods will sparkle with lights, creating a delightful atmosphere for evening strolls. Families and photographers alike will find numerous enchanting backdrops across the city, perfect for capturing the holiday spirit.

  • Elf Workshop Wednesdays: Held at the Family Initiatives Centre, where children can participate in crafts and make their own Christmas decorations.
  • Student Thursdays: Featuring Silent Disco events and special discounts.
  • Fire Shows and Theatrical Performances: Featuring fire dancers and holiday-themed theatre productions for all ages, including “The Queen of Baubles” and “The First Star Shines.”

Families can enjoy the festive fortune wheel on Wednesdays, where participants have a chance to win holiday prizes, and on specific weekends, charity events will support local causes. Special performances by international and local artists will fill the air with music, bringing an added dose of joy to the festive atmosphere.

Welcoming the New Year at MTP

Poznań will celebrate New Year’s Eve at the MTP with an impressive outdoor event, complete with live music, food vendors, and fireworks. The celebration marks a return to public festivities after years of cancellations due to pandemic restrictions and rising costs. With an array of performers planned, this celebration promises to be a fitting end to a magical holiday season.
