Poznań’s Green Escapes: Discovering Enchanting Parks, Gardens, and Nature Sanctuaries

As the gentle breeze of spring whispers through the air and the sun begins to cast its warm glow upon the earth, there’s no better time to immerse oneself in the lush greenery that Poznań has to offer.

Nestled within this bustling city are verdant sanctuaries, each a haven for those seeking solace and connection with nature. From the meticulously curated botanical gardens to the sprawling parks and tranquil nature reserves, Poznań’s green spaces beckon, promising moments of serenity and awe amidst the urban landscape.

Botanical Bliss: Poznań University Botanical Garden

Step into a realm where flora from around the globe converge in harmonious splendour – the Poznań University Botanical Garden. Established between 1922 and 1925, this verdant oasis spans 22 hectares, housing a remarkable collection of over 7,000 plant species and varieties from nearly every climatic zone on Earth. Here, amidst the curated sections dedicated to alpine flora, dendrology, and rare and endangered plants, visitors are invited on a botanical voyage spanning continents and ecosystems.

Among the garden’s treasures lies the alpinarium, a sprawling expanse of approximately 6,000 square metres adorned with a rich tapestry of mountainous flora. As you traverse its undulating terrain, you’ll find yourself immersed in the intricate ecology of alpine regions, where every plant tells a story of adaptation and resilience.

For those intrigued by the ecological tapestry of the Polish landscape, the Ecological Section offers a glimpse into native forests, meadows, and dunes, showcasing the intricate web of life that defines Poland’s natural heritage.

A Green Oasis Amidst Poznań’s Urban Landscape: Park Sołacki

Tucked away amidst the bustling streets of Poznań lies Park Sołacki, an idyllic enclave of greenery nestled between Małopolska and Litewska streets. Spanning 14.6 hectares, this verdant sanctuary dates back to its inception in 1908, with public access granted in 1911. Designed by Hermann Kube, the then-director of the Municipal Gardens, the park boasts a picturesque landscape characterized by two ponds formed by the damming of the Bogdanka stream. Overlooking one of these ponds stands a grand restaurant housed within a building relocated from the 1911 Eastern German Exhibition of Industry, Crafts, and Agriculture. Renovated multiple times, the structure now houses the “Meridian” hotel.

In 1913, the park gained tram connections to the city centre, with a wooden tram shelter, known as the “Green Booth,” still standing on Małopolska Street. Noteworthy is the park’s diverse tree population, featuring both native species and exotic varieties like Canadian hemlock, swamp cypress, and Douglas fir. Undergoing extensive renovation in recent years, Park Sołacki continues to enchant visitors with its timeless allure, blending history, nature, and tranquility in perfect harmony.

Traversing Treetops: The Innovative Walkway

Embark on a journey through the treetops and immerse yourself in the enchanting world of Poznań’s Treetops Walkway. Spanning the verdant expanse near Lake Malta, this architectural marvel offers a unique perspective on the city’s natural splendour, elevating visitors to a lofty vantage point suspended among the branches.

As you ascend to heights previously unseen, a sense of wonder envelops you, and the bustling city below fades into the tranquil embrace of the forest canopy. With each step, you’re greeted by panoramic vistas and the soothing melody of birdsong, a symphony of nature’s creation unfolding before your eyes.

Exploring Wildlife History : The Old ZOO

Nestled in the heart of the city lies Stare Zoo, a cherished sanctuary for both wildlife and visitors alike. Founded in 1874, this historic zoo boasts a diverse array of animal species amidst picturesque surroundings, offering a glimpse into the wonders of the natural world.

The zoo traces its roots to the 1870s when the Stargardzko-Poznań Railway Station became a gathering spot for a group of bowlers. In 1871, to celebrate their president’s birthday, each member gifted an animal, leading to the establishment of a small menagerie in the station’s courtyard, which initially housed various animals including a goat, sheep, miniature pig, cat, rabbit, squirrel, goose, duck, hen, peacock, as well as a monkey acquired from wandering Roma and a trained bear. Over time, public interest grew, and the menagerie expanded, supported by entrance fees and donations. In 1875, the Zoological Garden Association was formed, securing financial support from the city.

Eventually, due to space constraints and designated breeding standards, most large animals such as primates and large predators left the zoo grounds. The zoo transitioned into a public park in 2009, with recent additions including the Reptile Pavilion in 2012 and a turtle pavilion funded by the participatory budget in 2021.
