Step back in time with us as we revisit the electrifying opening night of KontenerART 2024, where Afro Poznań’s thrilling performance dazzled spectators by merging fiery spectacle with rhythmic grace. Dive into our retrospective and rediscover how this unforgettable evening celebrated the primal and transformative power of art.
The Spirit of KontenerART
As the warm summer days beckon, urban dwellers are increasingly seeking out serene natural spaces that offer not only relaxation but also vibrant community gatherings. KontenerART’s opening ceremony on the last weekend of April 2024 served as a perfect blend of these elements, providing an art-infused sanctuary right in the heart of Poznań.
KontenerART has always been a space that promotes artistic freedom and innovation, and this opening was no exception. The performances were more than just entertainment; they were a profound reminder of our intrinsic connection to the earth and each other. This celebration of movement and rhythm was a powerful testament to the transformative potential of art and communal spirit.
A Night of Fire and Rhythm
The event was highlighted by a standout performance from the Fundacja Artystyczna Obszar Działań Twórczych SOMA and Afro Poznań. The ensemble explored the primal roots of human expression through dance and music, creating a spectacle that mimicked the undulating rhythms of nature itself. The pulsating drums and the wild, free-flowing movements of the dancers, accompanied by the mesmerising play of fire, captured the raw essence of the natural world, leaving the audience spellbound.

Fire, revered through the ages as a symbol of strength, power, rebirth, and transformation, dances in the air during the performance. The history of fire dancing stretches back to the rituals and ceremonies of ancient peoples who used fire as a source of energy, protection, and joy. Over time, fire dancing has evolved into a spectacular and artistic display. The dancing flames emit positive energy, transferring it to the audience, facilitating an internal transformation.
Harmonising the Old and New
Both performing groups at the KontenerART opening share a common goal: the pursuit of self-development and the creative fabrication of shared spaces, enabling the exploration of individual paths of growth. They animate our surrounding world to make our lives better, aiming for professionalism through hard work, determination, and a love for the arts.
Afro Poznań, along with their friends, find their roots in the trance-inducing sounds of West African percussion music. Their colourful rhythmic structures are brought to life as air and body vibrations, with energetic rhythms and spirited dance impacting both emotionally and physiologically. African Dance showcases the grace and rhythm of daily activities, significant events, and life stages, characterised by primal wildness and joy. It moves all parts of the body, develops awareness, coordination, and improves condition, agility, resilience, and flexibility. It reveals and enhances our inherent potential, strength, and power, granting freedom and a sense of liberation.
As KontenerART continues to flourish as a beacon of creativity and communal engagement, its events like these remind us of the power of collective artistic endeavours. Poznań’s residents and visitors alike can look forward to a season filled with similar inspiring experiences, proving that art does, indeed, breathe life into the community.
