Piątkowo, historically known as the “bedroom district” of Poznań, is undergoing an impressive transformation thanks to the innovative Początek Piątkowo project. Spearheaded by ROBYG, this development merges sustainable design with the area’s modernist roots, redefining Piątkowo as a lively and well-connected urban neighbourhood for residents and families alike.
Piątkowo’s Transformation from 1970s Origins to a Thriving Community
Piątkowo’s journey as part of Poznań began in 1973 when it was annexed to the city, setting the stage for rapid residential expansion. By 1976, fields east of Obornicka Street (ulica Obornicka) were dotted with large-panel prefabricated housing blocks, built to provide essential housing for the growing workforce of Poznań. These new developments were named after Polish kings, such as Jan III Sobieski and Bolesław Chrobry, a trend that remains a unique feature of Piątkowo’s landscape today.
Construction of these so-called ‘Gierek-era’ housing estates began in 1976. Each group of blocks was named after Polish kings, and it was also around this time that the single-family homes of Osiedle Marysieńki were built, creating a unique and lasting part of Piątkowo’s character.
Says Renata Żakowska, project manager of Początek Piątkowo at ROBYG.
While these developments brought much-needed housing, Piątkowo’s limited local amenities, shops, and workplaces earned it the moniker “bedroom district,” as most residents commuted to other parts of Poznań for work, shopping, and leisure. The quiet residential blocks offered few services, shaping Piątkowo as a calm, functional suburb rather than a vibrant, self-contained community.
Bringing Modern Architecture to a Historical Setting
Today, ROBYG’s Początek Piątkowo seeks to enhance this legacy by balancing modern design with the area’s historical roots. Inspired by the minimalist, modernist style of the 1970s, the buildings incorporate warm, earthy tones—beige, graphite, and brown izoflex tiles—with sleek glass balustrades and panoramic windows. These details add a sense of lightness to the structures, while common areas and corridors, finished in wood-effect Finsa panels and tasteful greyscale tiling, reflect ROBYG’s focus on creating welcoming, quality living spaces.
When designing Początek Piątkowo, we faced the challenge of honouring the modernist structure while also enhancing its aesthetic appeal. Each detail, from the double-height lobby with live plants to custom lighting, reflects our commitment to elegance and a welcoming atmosphere.

Community-Centred Design and High-Quality Amenities
Początek Piątkowo is envisioned as a neighbourhood where all essential amenities are within easy reach. Following the “15-minute city” model, which prioritises accessible, connected living, the development includes green spaces, retail shops, fitness facilities, schools, and childcare services. This blend of residential and social spaces fosters a strong sense of community and enables residents to enjoy a balanced lifestyle without the need for long commutes.
The project will introduce around 1,250 new apartments by 2029, designed to cater to diverse housing needs. From compact units for singles to spacious family homes, Początek Piątkowo offers a variety of options to appeal to a broad range of residents, reflecting Poznań’s growth and diversity.

Sustainability at the Core of Początek Piątkowo
Początek Piątkowo is a testament to ROBYG’s commitment to environmental stewardship and social responsibility. Each building is equipped with photovoltaic panels, water-saving installations, and green roofs that encourage biodiversity and natural cooling. These eco-friendly features help reduce utility costs for residents and minimise the community’s environmental impact.
The pedestrian-friendly design further underscores ROBYG’s dedication to sustainability, with an emphasis on walkways, bike paths, and green zones over car traffic. Rain gardens, insect habitats, and birdhouses are thoughtfully placed throughout, creating a vibrant green space that supports local wildlife and adds to the area’s charm. ROBYG’s efforts extend beyond aesthetics, as these natural elements enhance air quality and contribute to a healthier living environment for residents.

A Vision for Piątkowo’s Future
As construction moves forward, Początek Piątkowo is setting a new benchmark for sustainable urban development in Poland. The project’s final phase, scheduled for completion by 2029, will transform Piątkowo into an integrated community aligned with Poznań’s urban vision. By blending respect for Piątkowo’s history with forward-thinking design and green practices, ROBYG has established a foundation for a neighbourhood where residents can thrive.
Początek Piątkowo invites both individuals and families to discover the benefits of living in a community designed with environmental awareness, convenience, and quality at its core. With each phase of the project, Piątkowo’s potential as a vibrant district becomes more apparent, as the former “bedroom district” transforms into a thriving centre of urban life in Poznań.
