Rusałka’s Scenic Trails Get a Much-Needed Makeover

Rusałka Lake, one of Poznań’s most beloved outdoor spots, is about to undergo a transformation! Years of wear and tear have left its walking and cycling paths in poor condition, often turning them into muddy obstacles after heavy rains. But thanks to the Poznań Civic Budget, key sections of these trails will soon be renovated with natural materials, making them more durable and enjoyable for everyone. Here’s what’s changing and why this upgrade matters for the city’s favourite green escape.

A New Chapter for Poznań’s Favourite Lakeside Paths

Rusałka Lake is one of Poznań’s most cherished outdoor spots, a place where joggers, cyclists, and families come to escape the city’s hustle. However, its picturesque trails have seen better days. Years of use, combined with harsh autumn and winter weather, have left them degraded — especially on the northern and southern edges, where muddy patches often force visitors to take detours across the grass. But good news is on the horizon! Thanks to the Poznań Civic Budget, key sections of these beloved paths will soon undergo a thoughtful and environmentally friendly renovation.

A Natural Upgrade: What’s Changing?

This renovation isn’t just about a simple repaving job. The paths will be rebuilt with natural crushed stone and geotextile fabric, a method designed to improve durability while keeping the area’s natural character intact. The project will also map out which sections are prone to flooding and adjust the materials accordingly to prevent future issues.

The Zakład Lasów Poznańskich (Poznań Forests Authority) is leading the effort, working closely with local neighbourhood councils from Sołacz, Ogrody, and Wola. Together, they’ve identified the worst sections and discussed how to balance the needs of both pedestrians and cyclists.

One idea under consideration? Educational signage encouraging cyclists to use alternate routes slightly away from the lake, helping to ease congestion and improve safety.

A Place for Everyone

Rusałka isn’t just any lake — it’s a vital recreational hub for Poznań’s residents. With its forested surroundings and diverse amenities, it offers something for everyone:

  • Runners and cyclists love the trails for their natural beauty and varying terrains.
  • Families enjoy the spacious playgrounds, picnic areas, and sandy beach.
  • Fitness enthusiasts make use of the outdoor gym and volleyball courts.
  • Swimmers flock to the lake during summer, where a lifeguarded beach provides safe and refreshing waters.
  • Wildlife lovers can spot everything from rare dragonflies to elegant great crested grebes.

Rusałka is also home to community events, such as the Grand Prix Poznań cross-country races and the traditional New Year’s cyclist meetup. The upcoming renovations will only enhance its appeal, ensuring it remains a top destination for years to come.

A Lake with a Complex History

Beyond its modern-day charm, Rusałka has a deep and sometimes sombre past. The lake itself was artificially created during World War II by German occupiers, using forced labour from Jewish prisoners. Many of the stones used in its construction came from desecrated Jewish cemeteries.

In addition, the forests surrounding the lake hold memorials to victims of Nazi executions, where thousands of people were tragically killed. Today, visitors often leave flowers and candles at these sites, ensuring that Rusałka remains not just a place of leisure, but also of remembrance.

When Will the Changes Happen?

Renovation work is set to begin between May and June, just in time for summer visitors to enjoy smoother, safer trails. The improvements will benefit both casual walkers and avid sports enthusiasts, making it easier to navigate the lake’s surroundings without encountering muddy obstacles.

A Step Toward Sustainable Recreation

What makes this project stand out is its commitment to sustainability. By using natural materials and improving water drainage, the upgrades will extend the life of the paths while keeping Rusałka’s scenic charm intact.

Additionally, efforts to educate the public on sharing the space respectfully — through better signage and awareness campaigns — will ensure that cyclists, joggers, and walkers can all enjoy the area harmoniously.

Looking Forward

Poznań is known for its green spaces, and projects like this show a growing appreciation for preserving and improving them. Whether you visit Rusałka to exercise, relax, or reflect on its history, the upcoming changes will make the experience even better.

So, next time you’re planning a lakeside walk, know that Rusałka is on its way to becoming even more welcoming — one well-maintained path at a time.
