Let’s Celebrate St. Catherine’s Day 2024 in Poznań Together!

St. Catherine’s Day (Katarzynka) is just around the corner, and Poznań is preparing a festive weekend filled with history, family fun, and a unique tribute to rail heritage. On 23 and 24 November 2024, the city invites locals and visitors alike to join the celebrations at the beloved Maltanka Park Railway. With historic rides, exhibits, and hands-on activities, it’s the perfect way to honour St. Catherine, the patron saint of railway workers, while stepping back in time.

Who Is St. Catherine and Why Do We Celebrate Her Day?

St. Catherine of Alexandria, known for her intellect and bravery, is an iconic figure in Christian history. Her legacy has made her a significant patron saint in Poland, particularly among railway workers and transport enthusiasts. For decades, St. Catherine’s Day (Katarzynka) has been celebrated across the country as a day to recognise the dedication of those in the transport and rail industries. In Poznań, this takes on a special form, bringing together both residents and tourists to pay homage to this tradition through engaging, family-friendly activities.

Special Attractions for St. Catherine’s Day 2024

Poznań’s St. Catherine’s Day (Katarzynka) celebrations offer a wide range of attractions, combining historical displays with immersive experiences. Here’s a glimpse at what awaits:

  • Maltanka Railway Rides: One of the main attractions, Maltanka’s heritage rides give visitors the chance to experience rail travel as it was in the early 20th century.
  • Historic Vehicle Exhibits: Venues across Poznań will display classic trams, buses, and other transport vehicles, including both modern and vintage models.
  • Hands-On Driving Experiences: Visitors will have the unique chance to learn how to operate a tram or bus under expert guidance.
  • Special Tram and Bus Routes: Free shuttle routes will operate throughout the city, connecting all event locations for ease of travel.

These activities make St. Catherine’s Day (Katarzynka) a fantastic opportunity for families, history enthusiasts, and transport lovers to explore Poznań’s rich transit heritage in a festive setting.

Maltanka Park Railway

The Maltanka Park Railway is a cherished part of Poznań’s heritage. Established in the 1950s as a recreational railway, it has since become an essential part of local culture, with each train and carriage embodying decades of history. During St. Catherine’s Day (Katarzynka) 2024, visitors can take special rides on Maltanka’s oldest operational wagons, the “Snouty” and the “Cowboy.” These vintage cars are beloved pieces of railway history:

  • Snouty (MBxc1-41): This motorised car, built in 1932, holds the title of Poland’s oldest operational rail vehicle. Its design and engineering reflect the 1930s era, making it a rare and invaluable piece of heritage.
  • Cowboy Wagon: Originally a baggage car from around 1912, this carriage was transformed into a passenger wagon over the years. Now it is a comfortable, heated space for passengers, perfect for a November outing.

On 23 and 24 November, Maltanka Railway will be running these historic vehicles every hour from 10:00 to 16:00. With each departure from Maltanka Station at the hour and from Zwierzyniec Station at half-past, families can enjoy a leisurely and scenic ride along Poznań’s beloved park railway.
