This summer, heading to the lake in Poznań means more than sunbathing. The new “Sustainable Beach Day” campaign brings games, contests, and practical tips on how to enjoy your time outdoors without harming the environment. Starting July 25 at Lake Rusałka, the events are free, fun, and focused on real actions everyone can take to reduce waste and protect local nature.
Zero-Waste Beach Day
Spending the day by the lake is one of Poznań’s favorite summer pastimes. Whether it’s Rusałka, Kierskie, or Strzeszynek, the lakes are packed with swimmers, picnickers, and families enjoying the season. But with all that activity comes a big problem: trash. From plastic bottles to leftover food packaging, waste often ends up on the sand or in the water.
That’s where “Sustainable Beach Day” comes in. Organized by POSiR and the Poznań Waste Management Department (ZZO), the campaign is all about showing people that small choices — like sorting waste, bringing your own bottle, or skipping single-use items — can make a real difference. And it’s done in a way that’s easy, friendly, and fun.
Event schedule
- Lake Rusałka – Friday, July 25, 14:00–17:00. Rusałka is the closest to the city center and great for relaxing walks, picnics, and swimming.
- Kiekrz (Plaża Parkowa) – Thursday, August 1, 14:00–18:00. Lake Kierskie is the biggest in Poznań and popular with sailors, paddleboarders, and families who enjoy wider beaches.
- Strzeszynek – Friday, August 2, 13:00–17:00. Strzeszynek is a weekend classic with its big sandy beach, snack bars, and nearby cycling paths.
What to Expect
At each “Sustainable Beach Day” event, you can expect a laid-back, friendly atmosphere where learning something useful is part of the fun. Educators and volunteers will be on hand with eco-themed games, simple quizzes, and small competitions for both kids and adults. You’ll have a chance to win prizes, try out smart habits like using reusable containers, and pick up practical tips on how to cut down on waste during your day at the lake.
The idea is to keep things relaxed and accessible while showing that enjoying the outdoors and protecting nature can go together. It’s not about being perfect — just about doing a bit better each time you visit.

Our Tips For a Sustainable Beach Day
The idea is simple: enjoy your time by the water, but do it in a way that doesn’t leave a mess. Here are a few practical tips anyone can follow:
- Bring a reusable bag: Skip the plastic and pack your things in a fabric or recycled bag.
- Use food containers: Glass jars or stainless-steel boxes are perfect for snacks and lunches.
- Avoid disposable cutlery: Bring your own reusable fork, spoon, and straw.
- Carry your own bottle: A filtered or insulated bottle means no need for store-bought drinks.
- Take your trash home: If the bins are full, don’t leave waste behind. Sort and throw it away properly later.
- Choose eco-friendly sunscreen: Look for products with natural ingredients and no microplastics.

Less Waste, More Awareness
Even if you can’t go fully zero-waste, every step matters. Bringing your own cup or refusing a plastic fork might not seem like a big deal, but if hundreds of people do it, the results add up fast. Plus, it’s easier than you think. Most of these changes don’t cost more and can even save you money in the long run.
The “Sustainable Beach Day” campaign isn’t trying to make anyone feel guilty — it’s about offering easy ways to do better. You don’t need to be perfect. Just being more mindful about what you bring and what you leave behind makes a big difference!
We want to remind everyone that there’s no vacation from waste sorting and show how to care for nature while enjoying time off. There will be quizzes, games, and contests for participants. It’s a great opportunity to combine relaxation with learning and take care of the natural surroundings together.
