Explore the transformative power of dance and inclusivity as we delve into the captivating story of “Łabędzie” (Swans) – a groundbreaking production at Teatr Wielki in Poznań. Witness the convergence of artistry and accessibility as visually impaired, partially sighted, and differently abled dancers redefine the boundaries of classical ballet, inspiring audiences worldwide.
Teatr Wielki w Poznaniu
Teatr Wielki im. Stanisława Moniuszki in Poznań has emerged as a leading force in European opera under the directorship of Renata Borowska-Juszczyńska since 2012. With an expanding repertoire and a commitment to contemporary productions, it has become a beacon for young talent and earned international acclaim, including nominations for prestigious awards like the Opera Awards, known as the opera Oscars.
The dynamic development of Teatr Wielki is the result of actions aligned with the mission guiding the Poznań stage: to reach audiences from various social groups, not to confine itself to an elitist circle of connoisseurs, to familiarise audiences with the specifics of theatre through systematically conducted educational activities in a participatory formula, and to stage “site-specific” performances. These principles are aptly described by the slogan accompanying recent seasons: #operaotwiera (opera opens).
Unlocking Dance: The Story of “Łabędzie”
In October 2022, the Teatr Wielki in Poznań unveiled “Łabędzie,” a dance spectacle choreographed by Tobiasz Sebastian Berg. What makes this performance unique is its collaboration with visually impaired, partially sighted, and differently abled dancers. It’s a groundbreaking piece that not only touches hearts but also captivates audiences and the media worldwide. By breaking traditional dance boundaries, “Łabędzie” has redefined accessibility in the arts, earning international acclaim and even winning the Audience Prize at the prestigious FEDORA competition in February 2023.
A Unique Collaboration
“Łabędzie” is not just a dance performance; it’s an artistic endeavour rooted in participation and integration. Berg, along with a team of talented individuals, embarked on a journey to expand the realm of classical ballet through imagination and inclusivity. By inviting visually impaired and differently abled individuals into the creative process, they challenged conventional notions of dance and made it more accessible to all. Through open workshops and innovative techniques like contact improvisation and body risk, participants were empowered to express themselves through movement, culminating in a professional production inspired by the timeless classic, “Swan Lake.”
We invited open-minded and creative individuals to collaborate, who are often overlooked in the planning and execution of cultural activities. Together, we strive to create a dance accessible even to those who cannot see movement or ballet with their own eyes. We engage in a dialogue with the codified form of classical dance, expanding it through the imagination of creators and making it more accessible.

Beyond Boundaries: Redefining Ballet
The choice of “Swan Lake” as inspiration was deliberate. It’s a nod to tradition but also a departure from it. The majestic swan, with its graceful movements, serves as a metaphor for the beauty and resilience found within each participant. By exploring the essence of ballet through contemporary dance, “Łabędzie” challenges stereotypes and invites audiences to see dance in a new light. The costumes and set, crafted from materials readily available in the theatre’s inventory, further emphasise the spirit of inclusivity and resourcefulness that defines the project.
Empowering Through Art
For the participants, “Łabędzie” is more than just a performance; it’s a platform for self-discovery and personal growth. Despite facing societal barriers, these artists bring passion and dedication to every rehearsal. Under Berg’s guidance, they not only learn choreography but also assert their presence on stage, challenging preconceived notions of ability and disability. The production is a testament to their resilience and creativity, proving that art knows no boundaries.
Celebrating Success
The success of “Łabędzie” extends beyond the stage. Winning the FEDORA Audience Prize is a testament to the power of inclusive art. It’s a recognition of the collective effort put forth by the participants, the creative team, and the audience. By embracing diversity and breaking down barriers, “Łabędzie” has set a new standard for artistic excellence and social inclusion.
“Swans” is an artistic endeavour based on participation and integration, envisioning the personal development of project participants, refining and documenting the creative work method with visually impaired individuals on the dance theatre spectacle, and preparing the institution for interaction with people with visual disabilities.

“Łabędzie” is more than just a dance performance; it’s a celebration of diversity, resilience, and the human spirit. Through collaboration and creativity, it has redefined what is possible in the world of ballet, inviting everyone to unlock their potential and soar to new heights.
