The Moniuszko Festival: A Celebration of Timeless Polish Opera

This autumn, Poznań will come alive with the sounds of one of Poland’s greatest composers, Stanisław Moniuszko, as the II Moniuszko Festival takes centre stage. Whether you appreciate traditional interpretations or are seeking fresh, innovative productions, this festival has something for everyone.

Festival Opening: The Premiere of Flis

The festival kicks off with the premiere of Moniuszko’s one-act opera Flis on September 28 and 29. This charming opera, last performed on the Poznań stage in 1997, will be reimagined in a more intimate, chamber format. Directed by Barbara Poll, the production will be staged at the Teatr Polski (Polish Theatre), whose cosy atmosphere will enhance the personal, emotional nature of the story. Musicologist Jakub Lis, known for his dedication to reviving Moniuszko’s lesser-known works, brings his expert touch to this production. Under the baton of Rafał Kłoczko, the young, vibrant cast is set to breathe new life into Flis — a tale of love, family, and honour set against the serene backdrop of a riverside village.

Jawnuta: A New Take on an Old Classic

One of the festival’s most anticipated highlights is Jawnuta, a Moniuszko opera that explores themes of love, prejudice, and the clash between cultures. This moving story of forbidden love between a Polish nobleman and a Romani woman will be brought to life by acclaimed director Ilaria Lanzino. Premiered in 2022 to wide acclaim at the Poznań International Fair, this new staging of Jawnuta will feature Romani artists alongside the talented soloists of the Grand Theatre.

The production was lauded for its emotional depth and the way it tackled contemporary issues of intolerance and societal expectations. It was awarded the prestigious International Opera Award in 2023, commonly referred to as the “Opera Oscar.” This visually stunning and deeply poignant production will be performed from October 3 to 6, offering audiences a fresh perspective on one of Moniuszko’s most powerful works.

The Beauty of Moniuszko’s Songs: Intimate Concerts

For those who enjoy the more delicate side of Moniuszko’s work, the festival will also feature two evenings dedicated to his vocal chamber music. These intimate concerts will take place in two iconic locations: the historic Bazar Poznański on October 1, and the elegant foyer of the Grand Theatre on October 13. Directed by Andrei Yakushau, these performances will offer a selection of Moniuszko’s beloved songs, such as the famous Prząśniczka, as well as lesser-known gems. Accompanied by piano and arranged for a chamber ensemble, these concerts will showcase the lyrical beauty of Moniuszko’s compositions, offering a quieter, yet equally powerful, side of his musical genius.
