A Living Legacy: The Oldest Violin Workshop in Poland Celebrates 140 Years of Craftsmanship

Poznań is home to the oldest violin workshop in Poland – Niewczyk i Synowie, located at Woźna Street 6. Founded in 1885, this unique luthier’s workshop celebrates its 140th anniversary this year, making it not only a family treasure but also a symbol of the city’s cultural identity. It is one of just three workshops of its kind still operating worldwide. Today, it continues to combine tradition with innovation, connecting generations of craftsmen and musicians.

The Legacy of Niewczyk i Synowie

The story of the oldest violin workshop in Poland began in 1885 with Franciszek Niewczyk. He first set up his business in Poznań, later moving to Lviv, where he founded Poland’s first national factory for orchestral, string, and wind instruments. His instruments were so highly regarded that they often surpassed the quality of renowned German makers. His customers included Poles, Prussians, Russians, and Austrians.

When the family returned to Poznań, the workshop reopened under the name Niewczyk i Synowie (Niewczyk & Sons), and the tradition continued across generations. Today, it is led by Benedykt Niewczyk, who took over from his father Stefan. The workshop has survived wars, political shifts, and economic transformations, and it is now not only the oldest violin workshop in Poland but also one of the three oldest of its kind in the world.

To mark this milestone, Mayor Jacek Jaśkowiak met with Benedykt Niewczyk, the current master luthier of the oldest violin workshop in Poland.

Thanks to you, the traditions of lutherie in our city are not only preserved but also developed and passed on to future generations. Your workshop, operating continuously for 140 years, is a symbol of reliability and pride in craftsmanship – values that have always been close to the hearts of the people of Poznań.

Emphasized the mayor.

Benedykt Niewczyk: Science and Craft Combined

The strength of Niewczyk i Synowie lies not only in tradition but also in innovation. Benedykt Niewczyk studied experimental physics with a specialization in acoustics at Adam Mickiewicz University. His dual expertise allows him to combine traditional luthier techniques with modern research on violin acoustics and his passion for violin-making merges seamlessly with his academic research into violin acoustics. He is the co-author of several scientific publications. As a lecturer at AMU, he brings both practical expertise and scientific insight to his students.

Niewczyk is also the only luthier entrusted with the instruments of participants in the Henryk Wieniawski International Violin Competition. He also serves as an expert witness for the District Court in Poznań, combining his technical skills with legal expertise. His dedication and impact on the craft have earned him several honors, including the honorary badge “For Merits to the Greater Poland Region” and, most recently, the title of “Distinguished for the City of Poznań.”

The Oldest Violin Workshop in Poland: 140 Years of Niewczyk i Synowie in Poznań

Connected to the Wieniawski International Violin Competition

The Henryk Wieniawski International Violin Competition, held every five years since 1952 in Poznań, is the oldest event of its kind in the world. Founded in honor of Henryk Wieniawski, one of Poland’s most celebrated violinists and composers and closely tied to the oldest violin workshop in Poland, the competition draws the most promising young violinists from across the globe.

The event is part of the World Federation of International Music Competitions, headquartered in Geneva. Having Niewczyk i Synowie as the workshop responsible for repairing and conserving instruments during the competition highlights Poznań’s prestige in the world of classical music. With legendary jurors such as Dawid Oistrakh, Yehudi Menuhin, and Maxim Vengerov, the competition has launched the careers of violinists like Ginette Neveu, Ida Haendel, and Agata Szymczewska.

Niewczyk i Synowie and the Future of Craft

While it holds 140 years of history, the oldest violin workshop in Poland is also very much part of the present: The Niewczyk i Synowie is a living institution that adapts to modern times while preserving its heritage. Beyond building and repairing violins, the workshop takes part in local initiatives such as Poznań’s “Craft Alley” (Zaułek Rzemiosła) program, which supports unique artisans by providing affordable workshop spaces, promotional campaigns, and professional training. This initiative highlights the city’s commitment to preserving rare crafts and ensuring that traditions like violin-making continue to thrive.

For Benedykt Niewczyk, the workshop is not only about preserving history but also about innovation. His scientific work on violin acoustics ensures that the knowledge passed down through generations is enriched by modern research, offering a perfect blend of tradition and progress.

A Symbol of Poznań’s Identity

The 140th anniversary of Niewczyk i Synowie is more than just a family celebration. It is a symbol of Poznań’s respect for craftsmanship, culture, and continuity. The workshop embodies values that resonate strongly with the city’s spirit – reliability, dedication, and pride in one’s work.

With its rare status as one of the world’s oldest violin workshops, it continues to position the city on the global cultural map. Looking ahead, one thing is certain: as long as the sounds of violins are heard in concert halls and competitions, the Niewczyk workshop will remain an inseparable part of that story.
