Every year in May, the International Firefighters’ Day provides a moment to honour the bravery and sacrifice of firefighters who stand ready to confront fires, natural disasters, and other emergencies, often at great personal risk. In Greater Poland, the Volunteer Fire Brigade of Amica, with a history spanning nearly 77 years, epitomises this relentless dedication to service.
A Trailblazer in Corporate-Backed Firefighting
The Volunteer Fire Brigade of Amica is likely the only private company in Poland to have initiated its own volunteer fire brigade. This unique unit was born out of a desire to ensure immediate fire safety and emergency response, not just within the confines of the company but extending to the local community. This initiative reflects a profound commitment to safety and community service that transcends typical corporate responsibilities.

From Humble Beginnings to a Community Pillar
The story of the Volunteer Fire Brigade of Amica began in 1947 when a group of 111 employees decided to form a firefighting squad. Recognized officially six years later by the Union of Volunteer Fire Brigades, the brigade expanded its reach beyond the company grounds. Today, the unit boasts 38 active members, both men and women, who are predominantly Amica employees, demonstrating a diverse and committed force ready to tackle any emergency.
At the Heart of Local Safety
The Volunteer Fire Brigade of Amica, supported solely by corporate funding, is exceptionally well-equipped, with modern tools that ensure efficient and safe operations. The unit frequently collaborates with the National Fire Service to address fires and local threats beyond its immediate environment, covering the Szamotuły county and the Noteć Forest area. The availability of advanced firefighting equipment sets the Volunteer Fire Brigade of Amica apart, enabling a high degree of effectiveness in rescue and firefighting missions.
Employee safety is always our top priority, which is why we take all possible measures to ensure our firefighters are equipped with the most modern equipment. This effort is fruitful because our unit stands out in terms of equipment compared to other volunteer fire brigades, which in turn translates into the effectiveness of our firefighting and rescue operations
says Jacek Rutkowski, President of the Management Board at Amica S.A.
A Legacy of Lifesaving Actions
Throughout its distinguished history, the Volunteer Fire Brigade, Amica has responded to numerous significant emergencies. From battling a major fire at a children’s home in Wronki in 1984 to combating extensive forest fires in the 1990s, the brigade’s readiness and bravery have been unmistakable. Their commitment is year-round, illustrated vividly when firefighters had to leave a Firefighters’ Day celebration in 2007 to extinguish a blaze at the Oporowo Palace.
More Than Emergency Response
Education and prevention are also critical components of the Volunteer Fire Brigade of Amica’s mission. The brigade conducts regular workshops and demonstrations to spread knowledge about fire safety and first aid. These efforts not only prepare the community for emergencies but also foster a culture of safety and preparedness.

Deep Community Ties and Recognition
The strength of the Volunteer Fire Brigade of Amica lies not only in its operational excellence but also in the strong bonds formed among its members. These relationships, forged through shared challenges and successes, extend beyond professional duties, with firefighters often participating in each other’s personal milestones. This camaraderie enhances their teamwork and effectiveness, contributing to the unit’s high regard within the community. The brigade has been honoured multiple times, including receiving the “Pride of Wronki” award and recognition in the Floriany awards for being a socially engaged employer.
A Beacon of Safety and Solidarity
For 77 years, the Volunteer Fire Brigade of Amica has stood as a beacon of safety and solidarity in Greater Poland. By blending corporate support with volunteer spirit, the unit not only protects lives and property but also strengthens the fabric of the community it serves. In an era where the pace of life continues to accelerate, the timeless values of dedication, bravery, and community service championed by the Volunteer Fire Brigade of Amica remain more vital than ever.
