The annual Spartakiada Seniorów, a highlight event that brings together senior athletes from across the city, is here! Poznań’s commitment to fostering active and healthy lifestyles for all its residents is well exemplified by the Poznańskie Ośrodki Sportu i Rekreacji (POSiR). Established to address the collective recreational and sports needs of Poznań’s citizens, POSiR has continually expanded its offerings to include a wide variety of sports activities, ensuring that there is something for everyone, regardless of age or fitness level.
POSiR: A Pillar of Community Sports
Since its inception in 1996, POSiR has played a pivotal role in promoting physical activity among Poznań’s residents. Under the supervision of the Mayor of Poznań and the Department of Sport, POSiR provides excellent facilities and programs that cater to both young athletes and amateur sports enthusiasts. From professional training environments to community sports events, POSiR ensures that every resident can find a place to stay active.
Whether it’s organising sports competitions, running day camps, or offering training courses, POSiR works with professional instructors to create a dynamic and inclusive sports culture. The facilities cater to a wide range of activities, including the city’s largest skate park, which attracts youth interested in rollerblading, skateboarding, BMX biking, and scootering. For the younger children, POSiR offers fun, movement-based games and activities to instil a love for physical activity from an early age.
A Festival of Fitness
One of the standout events organised by POSiR is the Spartakiada Seniorów, a week-long sports festival dedicated to residents aged 55 and over. Held annually in late August, the Spartakiada Seniorów brings together seniors from across Poznań to compete in a variety of sports in an atmosphere that is both competitive and celebratory.
The Origins of Spartakiada
The term “Spartakiada” is inspired by the ancient Spartan tradition of athletic competition, emphasizing strength, endurance, and community spirit. The concept was popularized in the 20th century as a means to promote fitness and sports among various groups. In Poznań, the Spartakiada Seniorów was first introduced to encourage older adults to stay active and engage in regular physical exercise. Over the years, the event has grown in popularity and scope, offering a diverse range of activities that cater to different interests and fitness levels.
Previous editions of the Spartakiada Seniorów have seen participants compete in events such as table tennis, lawn tennis, chess, checkers, swimming, and bowling. Each year, the event evolves to include new sports and activities, ensuring that it remains exciting and relevant to its participants. The integration of new disciplines like badminton and kayaking in recent years has further enriched the program, attracting even more participants.
Program of the XVII Spartakiada Seniorów
This year, the XVII Spartakiada Seniorów will take place from August 26 to 30, featuring a diverse program of events:

A Tradition of Inclusion
The event culminates in a grand picnic at the Młodzieżowy Ośrodek Sportowy, featuring music, dancing, and a barbecue. This festive gathering is a highlight of the Spartakiada, providing participants with an opportunity to celebrate their achievements and enjoy a social event with peers.
Registration for the Spartakiada Seniorów is straightforward and affordable, with an entry fee of just 10 PLN. Participants can register online or in person at designated POSiR locations. The first 200 registrants will receive a commemorative T-shirt, and special awards will be given to the oldest female and male participants, as well as the overall winners. Medals will be awarded to the top three competitors in each event and age category, and all participants will receive diplomas.
Encouraging Active Lifestyles
Beyond the Spartakiada, POSiR supports senior fitness year-round through various programs and discounts. The “Poznańska Złota Karta” program offers seniors significant discounts on access to POSiR facilities, including ice rinks, tennis courts, and swimming pools. This initiative ensures that staying active is both affordable and accessible for Poznań’s senior residents.
