For many Poznań residents, the distinctive shape, engine sound and concertina-style body of an Ikarus bus are closely tied to memories of travelling around the city.
This weekend, those memories will return to the streets. On 3 and 4 October, historic Ikarus buses will operate special tourist services in Poznań, marking 45 years since large numbers of the Hungarian-built buses began arriving for the city's public transport system.
The event is being organised by MPK Poznań, Zarząd Transportu Miejskiego w Poznaniu (ZTM) and the Klub Miłośników Pojazdów Szynowych w Poznaniu (KMPS).
From the Ikarus 60 to the Ikarus 280
Ikarus buses had already appeared in Poznań before the 1980s. The first Ikarus 60 vehicles were operated in the city between 1957 and 1967.
The real Ikarus era, however, began in the early 1980s.
The first Ikarus 280.26 buses arrived in Poznań at the beginning of October 1981, following test runs during the summer. Further deliveries followed over the next decade, eventually bringing almost 270 Ikarus 280 buses to the city between 1981 and 1994.
Shorter Ikarus 260.04 buses joined the fleet from 1983, with 55 eventually operated in Poznań.
For drivers and passengers alike, the arrival of the large Hungarian articulated buses marked a significant change in the city's transport fleet. They became a familiar sight on busy routes across Poznań and remained in everyday service for decades.
As low-floor buses became increasingly common during the second half of the 1990s, the Ikaruses gradually disappeared from regular service. The final Series 200 buses operated on Poznań's daytime routes in January 2010.
Ikaruses return to Poznań for two days
The anniversary weekend will give passengers the opportunity to experience several historic Ikaruses on two special tourist routes.
Saturday, 3 October: tourist route 82
On Saturday, buses will operate between 10:00 and 16:00 on tourist route 82.
For the occasion, the route will use its historic destination names:
Górczyn - os. Kraju Rad, corresponding to today's Wichrowe Wzgórze.
A KMPS information and sales stand will also be set up at the Górczyn terminus, where visitors will be able to buy transport-themed souvenirs and memorabilia.
Sunday, 4 October: tourist route 85
On Sunday, the Ikaruses will operate between 10:00 and 15:00 on tourist route 85.
The route follows a historic alignment:
Os. Sobieskiego - os. Chrobrego - Wojciechowskiego - Lechicka - Murawa - Serbska - Bałtycka - Gdyńska - Główna - Rondo Śródka
There is one change to the historic route. Because of the LOTTO Poznań Marathon, buses will terminate at Rondo Śródka rather than continuing to Rondo Rataje.
Historic Ikaruses are coming from across Poland
The anniversary event will bring together vehicles from several cities, giving passengers the chance to see different versions of the Ikarus 280..
A preserved Ikarus belonging to MPK Poznań will also take part, strengthening selected services operated by the visiting vehicles.
The exact departure information from the main stops is being provided with the event timetable.
How to ride the Ikaruses
The anniversary services operate under the tourist-line fare system, rather than the standard arrangements for ordinary city routes.
Tickets can be bought from the conductors on board the buses.
Passengers should also be aware that the organisers may substitute other buses in the event of unexpected or operational circumstances.
For transport enthusiasts, the weekend offers an opportunity to compare preserved Ikaruses from different cities. For anyone who remembers them from everyday journeys, it is also a chance to experience the distinctive buses in motion once again.
And for younger passengers and visitors who never travelled on an Ikarus when they were part of Poznań's daily transport system, the weekend provides a straightforward way to see and ride one of the vehicles that shaped the city's public transport landscape for almost three decades.
