Tram services return to Fredry Street as new repairs affect Strzelecka

Poznań tram passengers can expect one improvement and a fresh set of diversions from Saturday, 31st October, as track replacement works at Most Teatralny come to an end and repairs begin on Strzelecka Street.

The reopening of the junction will restore tram services along Fredry Street, but the start of maintenance work on Strzelecka will disrupt routes serving the city centre and southern districts. Tram lines 2, 9 and 19 will follow alternative routes for approximately two weeks.

Most Teatralny works near completion

The replacement of tram points at Most Teatralny is approaching its final stage, with the main installation work on the Fredry Street side already completed. Finishing works are now under way, and the project is scheduled to be completed on Friday, 30th October.

From the first tram services on Saturday, 31st October, the junction and tracks along Fredry Street will reopen to tram traffic.

The change will restore the usual route through Fredry for several services, including lines 3, 4, 8, 9, 16 and 19. However, lines 9 and 19 will still need to divert around the separate works on Strzelecka Street.

Strzelecka Street track repairs start on 31st October

As one set of works finishes, another begins on Strzelecka Street. Routine inspections by MPK Poznań identified significant wear to the rails between Długa Street and Kopernika Street, on the track towards the AWF tram junction.

A speed restriction of 10 km/h has been introduced on the affected section because of the condition of the tracks.

MPK Poznań regularly inspects its infrastructure to identify problems before they develop into more serious failures. With the main work at Most Teatralny nearing completion, the operator can now turn its attention to the worn rails on Strzelecka.

The repair project will close the section of tram track between Plac Wiosny Ludów and the AWF stop from 31st October, with the disruption expected to last around two weeks.

Changes to tram lines 2, 9 and 19

The Strzelecka closure will affect three tram routes. Passengers travelling through the city centre should check their journey before setting off, particularly if they normally use stops around Półwiejska, Górna Wilda or the route towards Dębiec.

Line 2: Ogrody to Dębiec PKM

Line 2 will divert through Towarowa, Matyi and Wierzbięcice instead of following its usual route through the affected section of the city centre.

The revised route will run:

Ogrody - Dąbrowskiego - Zwierzyniecka - Rondo Kaponiera - Święty Marcin - Towarowa - Matyi - Wierzbięcice - 28 Czerwca 1956 r. - Dębiec PKM.

Line 9: Piątkowska to Dębiec PKM

Line 9 will return to its route through Fredry Street following the completion of the Most Teatralny works, but will then divert around the Strzelecka closure.

The revised route towards Dębiec PKM will run via Gwarna, Święty Marcin, Towarowa, Matyi, Królowej Jadwigi and Górna Wilda before rejoining 28 Czerwca 1956 r.

The return journey towards Piątkowska will follow the same diversion in reverse through Górna Wilda, Królowej Jadwigi, Matyi, Towarowa, Święty Marcin, Gwarna and Fredry.

Temporary Półwiejska stops will be located on Górna Wilda Street.

Line 19: Połabska to Dębiec PKM

Line 19 will also resume its route through Fredry Street before diverting via Gwarna, Święty Marcin, Towarowa, Matyi, Królowej Jadwigi and Górna Wilda.

Towards Dębiec PKM, the tram will then continue along 28 Czerwca 1956 r. On the return journey, it will follow the diversion in the opposite direction before heading back towards Połabska via Fredry, Roosevelta, Pułaskiego, Winogrady and Murawa.

As with line 9, temporary Półwiejska stops will be provided on Górna Wilda Street.

Other tram lines returning to their usual routes

The reopening of Most Teatralny will also bring changes to several other routes from 31 October.

  • Line 3: Returns to the route through Fredry Street, serving the connection between the Winogrady area and the southern and eastern parts of the city.

  • Line 4: Returns to Fredry Street on its route between Połabska and Małe Garbary.

  • Line 8: Resumes its route through Fredry Street between Miłostowo and Ogrody.

  • Line 16: Returns to Fredry Street on its route between Osiedle Sobieskiego and Franowo.

Weekend night services will also see changes. Line 201 will continue operating on its existing route, maintaining its standard weekend-night frequency. Line 202 will resume its regular route on weekend nights.

Check your journey before travelling

The changeover on 31st October means that passengers may encounter both restored services and new diversions on the same day. Those travelling through the city centre, particularly between the Old Town area and southern Poznań, should allow extra time and check the latest MPK Poznań service information before leaving home.

The Strzelecka repairs are expected to take around two weeks, although the published schedule should be checked for any subsequent updates.
