Poznań residents will have another opportunity to donate blood at City Hall this Thursday, 29th October, with a collection session taking place at Plac Kolegiacki 17.

The session will run from 8:30 am to 2:00 pm, with donation stations located on the ground floor near the council chambers. Visitors should enter through the courtyard, using entrance W11 marked Sala Sesyjna (Council Chamber).

The initiative is part of the city's ongoing cooperation with the Regional Centre for Blood Donation and Blood Treatment, helping make it easier for people to donate without travelling to a dedicated collection centre.

Further blood donation sessions at City Hall are planned for 22nd and 30th December.

What to know before donating

Blood donors must generally be aged between 18 and 65, weigh at least 50kg and be in good health. All prospective donors undergo medical checks, and the final decision on eligibility rests with the attending doctor.

Anyone planning to donate should bring valid identification, such as a passport, identity card or residence card. An electronic identity document may also be accepted, provided it can be presented in its refreshed form during registration.

It is advisable to drink plenty of fluids and eat a light, low-fat meal before arriving. Certain medical conditions, recent procedures and other circumstances can temporarily or permanently prevent someone from donating, so anyone unsure about their eligibility should check the current guidance from the Regional Centre for Blood Donation and Blood Treatment.

Benefits for regular donors

Donating blood can help save lives, and donors also receive access to selected test results, including blood group, blood count and screening for certain infections.

Under Polish regulations, eligible donors are entitled to time off work or study on the day of donation and the following day, subject to the relevant documentation. Tax relief may also be available for qualifying donations.

Poznań additionally offers free public transport to qualifying honorary blood donors who meet the applicable donation thresholds: 18 litres for men and 15 litres for women. A 50% fare discount is available at lower thresholds of 12 litres for men and 10 litres for women. Donors should confirm the current eligibility and application requirements with the relevant authorities before travelling.

Information about local donation opportunities and practical arrangements is available through the city's dedicated page.

For anyone who has been meaning to donate, Thursday's session offers a convenient opportunity to do so in the city centre. A short visit could make a real difference to patients who depend on blood donations.
