Poznań’s Teatr Wielki Artists Receive Multiple Jan Kiepura Theatre Awards

Artists associated with Poznań’s Teatr Wielki im. Stanisława Moniuszki have received several honours at this year’s Jan Kiepura Theatre Awards, with recognition spanning conducting, opera singing and stage design.

The awards, now in their 20th edition, recognise artists and creative teams working across Poland’s musical theatre scene. This year, several of the recipients have direct links to the Poznań opera house and productions presented there.

Awards for singers from Poznań productions

Among the recognised artists are two singers who appeared in Teatr Wielki’s production of Turandot.

Iwona Sobotka received the award for Best Opera Singer for her performance in the title role, while Ruslana Koval was recognised in the same category for her portrayal of Liù.

The production also featured a third award-winning singer. Stanisław Kuflyuk received the Best Opera Singer award for his performance as Amonasro in Aida.

The three artists have all appeared on the Poznań stage, adding a strong local connection to this year's awards.

Adam Banaszak recognised for conducting

The Best Conductor award went to Adam Banaszak for his work on The Barber of Seville at Warszawska Opera Kameralna and Cinderella, or the Triumph of Goodness at Opera i Filharmonia Podlaska.

Banaszak has a longstanding association with Teatr Wielki in Poznań, where he has conducted a number of productions.

Recognition for contemporary stage design

The awards also recognised work that brings newer visual approaches to opera.

Dorota Karolczak received the award for Best Multimedia Scenography for Dorian Gray. The production reflects the growing role of multimedia and digital visual elements in contemporary stage design, alongside more traditional theatrical techniques.

Jacek Kaspszyk was also among this year's recipients, receiving an award for lifetime achievement. The conductor has had a long association with Teatr Wielki in Poznań.

With several winners connected to the theatre, the 20th Jan Kiepura Theatre Awards provide another snapshot of the range of artistic work taking place around the Poznań opera scene, from established vocal repertoire to contemporary approaches to staging.
