PsiTulas: Giving Poznań’s Abandoned Dogs a Second Chance

PsiTulas (Hug-a-Pup – because every pup deserves love) is a lifeline for Poznań’s abandoned dogs, giving them a second chance at life. Every day, countless dogs are left to fend for themselves on the streets—some lost, some unwanted, and some who have never known kindness. But thanks to PsiTulas, these animals find rescue, rehabilitation, and the opportunity for a loving home. This incredible foundation, run by passionate volunteers, works tirelessly to rehome dogs in need. Whether through fostering, donating, or adopting, you can be part of this life-saving mission.

A Shocking Discovery on a Winter Evening

Poznań, 26 January 2025. What started as a peaceful evening stroll turned into a heartbreaking discovery. A couple walking their dog stumbled upon a bag filled with five starving puppies, left helpless in the cold. The tiny creatures, too weak to move, had been abandoned with no chance of survival on their own.

With no time to waste, an urgent appeal went out: temporary foster homes were needed immediately. This is just one of the countless emergencies that PsiTulas faces every day.

Who Are PsiTulas?

PsiTulas is not a large, government-funded organisation. It is a passionate team of private individuals fighting for the lives of Poznań’s abandoned, mistreated, and homeless dogs. Their work is fuelled entirely by donations, volunteer efforts, and the kindness of people willing to open their homes to animals in need.

The foundation operates without a physical shelter. Instead, it relies on a network of foster homes that provide temporary care for rescued dogs until they are adopted. This model ensures that every dog receives individual attention, medical care, and socialisation, making them ready for their forever homes.

Temporary Homes: A Lifeline for Rescue Dogs

One of the most crucial parts of their work is finding temporary foster homes. When a dog is rescued, especially in urgent cases like the five abandoned puppies, PsiTulas does not have a facility to house them. Instead, they count on kind-hearted individuals who take the dogs into their homes for a short period—providing food, warmth, and love until a permanent home is found.

Why are foster homes so important?

  • Many rescued dogs are in poor health and need a safe space to recover.
  • Puppies, like the ones found on 26 January, need round-the-clock care.
  • Foster homes help socialise dogs, making them more adoptable.
  • Every fostered dog frees up space for another one in need.

PsiTulas covers all costs—food, medical care, and supplies. Foster families only need to provide love and patience.

How You Can Help

Not everyone can foster a dog, but there are many ways to support PsiTulas:

  1. Adopt, Don’t Shop

Looking for a furry friend? Instead of buying from breeders, consider adopting one of PsiTulas’ rescues. Each dog has a unique story but shares the same dream: a loving home. The adoption process is designed to ensure a perfect match between dog and owner, so both can enjoy a happy, lifelong bond.

  1. Donate

Every rescue operation requires funds—for medical treatments, food, and emergency care. Even a small monthly donation makes a huge impact. You can donate directly via bank transfer:

  1. Provide Material Support

PsiTulas constantly needs supplies like high-quality dog food, blankets, leashes, toys, and cleaning products. If you have any to spare, your donation will directly help rescued dogs.

The most needed items include:

  • High-protein dry and wet food (brands like Brit Care, Dolina Noteci, Josera, etc.).
  • Veterinary diets for sick dogs (e.g., hypoallergenic, renal, hepatic).
  • Durable leashes, harnesses, and collars.
  • Comfortable beds, blankets, and towels.
  • Toys for stimulation, such as chew toys and snuffle mats.
  1. Volunteer Your Time

From helping with transport to promoting adoption posts on social media, volunteers are the backbone of PsiTulas. You can even use your skills—photography, graphic design, or event planning—to support their mission.

PsiTulas also needs volunteers for emergency interventions, such as rescuing dogs from dangerous situations, working with the police, or responding to reports of animal cruelty. If you’re willing to get involved, they provide guidance and training.

A Future Without Abandoned Dogs

Poznań, like many cities, faces a serious problem with pet abandonment. Whether due to neglect, financial struggles, or lack of awareness, too many dogs end up alone, hungry, and scared. PsiTulas is determined to change this.

Through education and awareness campaigns, they work to reduce the number of abandoned pets by promoting responsible pet ownership. Adopting a dog is a lifelong commitment, and PsiTulas ensures that future owners understand the responsibility they are taking on.

Together, We Can End Dog Homelessness in Poznań

PsiTulas is fighting a battle that should not exist—one against cruelty, neglect, and abandonment. But they are not giving up. With the support of everyday heroes—people who foster, donate, or simply spread awareness—they are giving Poznań’s abandoned dogs hope for a better future.
