Summer 2025 at the National Museum in Poznań is a celebration of learning through wonder and play.
Monet Returns: Beach at Pourville on Display from July 17
A highlight of summer 2025 at the National Museum in Poznań is the reintroduction of one of the most treasured works in its collection: Claude Monet’s Beach at Pourville. This luminous masterpiece, painted in 1882 during the artist’s stay on the Normandy coast, captures the ever-shifting light, atmosphere, and natural beauty of the seaside with poetic sensitivity.

The painting, once part of the collections of legendary impressionist art dealers Paul Durand-Ruel and Paul Cassirer, now holds a unique place in Polish culture as the only Monet in a Polish museum. Painted from the cliffs of Varengeville, looking toward the bay of Dieppe and the rock formation of Amont, the canvas reflects Monet’s deep emotional connection to the landscape and his relentless pursuit of capturing fleeting moments of natural brilliance.
During his stay in Pourville, Monet completed nearly 100 paintings in less than a year, often working on multiple canvases a day. He wrote to Alice Hoschedé, describing the village’s charm:
How beautiful the countryside becomes and what joy it would be to show you all its enchanting corners!
The painting is now on view in a temporary exhibition space as the museum prepares to reopen its European Art Gallery in a refreshed format. For visitors of all ages, this is a rare opportunity to stand before an original Monet—and witness the delicate harmony of sea, sky, and impressionist light.
