Greater Poland Sets Record with 30.7M PLN Sports Funding for Youth Training

Sports funding is driving Greater Poland’s vision for the future of athletics. With a record-breaking commitment of 30.7 million PLN, the Greater Poland Regional Government is set to transform the region’s athletic landscape. This bold initiative not only strengthens the foundations of sports but also cements Greater Poland’s reputation as a leader in innovative and inclusive regional development.

A Groundbreaking Agreement for Young Athletes

Greater Poland is setting a new benchmark in sports development by dedicating unprecedented sports funding to youth training. On 14 January 2025, the Greater Poland Regional Government signed an agreement with the Greater Poland Sports Association, ensuring comprehensive support for children and young athletes across the region from 2025 to 2028.

The programme includes financing for competitions, sports camps, and coaching staff. Most notably, Greater Poland has become the first region in Poland to introduce funding for training camps—an innovative feature that highlights its forward-thinking approach.

A Visionary Step Forward

This historic agreement underlines the region’s dedication to fostering future sports stars.

We always strive to act innovatively and support the growth of sports in the region. Thanks to this long-term funding, young athletes can better prepare for competing for medals and titles

said Jacek Bogusławski, a member of the Greater Poland Regional Board.

The allocated budget, totalling an impressive 30.7 million PLN, will be distributed progressively:

  • 2025: 7.1 million PLN
  • 2026: 7.5 million PLN
  • 2027: 7.9 million PLN
  • 2028: 8.3 million PLN

Funds will be allocated based on athletic achievements in youth sports, incentivising clubs to focus on performance and development.

Supporting Clubs, Coaches, and Athletes

At the centre of this initiative is the Greater Poland Sports Association, which has a long-standing partnership with the regional government. This association also manages the Centre for Non-Governmental Sports Organisations, created in 2018.

Under the new agreement, sports funding will directly benefit clubs, coaches, and athletes. It will cover essential expenses such as hiring facilities, organising training camps, and paying for coaching expertise.

This is a crucial step toward advancing sports in our region. The funds will allow clubs to focus on developing young talent.

noted Paweł Szczepaniak, President of the Greater Poland Sports Association.

A Historic Investment

The nearly 31-million-PLN in sports funding is the highest level of financial support for youth training in Greater Poland’s history. It is expected to revolutionise local sports infrastructure and create a culture of athletic excellence. It is expected to have a transformative impact on local sports infrastructure, encouraging more young people to pursue athletic careers and fostering a culture of excellence in the region.

This initiative goes beyond financial aid—it’s a long-term strategy to cultivate a generation of well-prepared, competitive athletes.

Our goal is to equip young athletes with the resources they need to succeed, from local competitions to international stages.

as Szczepaniak explained.

Beyond Sports: Holistic Youth Development

While the primary focus is on youth sports, the programme’s benefits extend to broader areas of development. By fostering discipline, teamwork, and resilience, this initiative contributes to the holistic growth of young individuals in Greater Poland.

It also aligns with social goals, such as reducing inequalities and improving access to opportunities for children and teenagers, regardless of their socioeconomic backgrounds. This sports funding programme is as much about building character as it is about developing champions.

Upcoming Events and Opportunities

Greater Poland’s dedication to sports funding and development will also shine during the 2024 National Youth Summer Sports Olympics, hosted in the region. This event is expected to underscore the province’s role as a national leader in nurturing young talent. This milestone will further enhance Greater Poland’s reputation as a hub for athletic excellence.

Pilot Programme: Individual Development Accounts for Students

In a related effort to support youth development, a pilot programme called Junior Individual Development Accounts has been introduced. Funded by the Ministry of Funds and Regional Policy, the programme aims to eliminate financial barriers to education and extracurricular activities for students from low-income families.

The pilot will run from January to June 2025 and offer 100 students stipends of up to 2,500 PLN per semester. Following the pilot phase, eligible students may receive up to 15,000 PLN over three years for a wide range of activities, including sports training.

This initiative complements Greater Poland’s broader goal of creating equal opportunities for young people to thrive, further leveraging the benefits of the region’s sports funding initiatives.

Poznań, the heart of Greater Poland, stands to gain significantly from this programme. Local sports clubs will be strengthened, young athletes will have greater opportunities to excel, and the community will take pride in a thriving sports culture.

Greater Poland’s commitment to inclusivity and innovation in sports highlights its role as a beacon of progress—a region where ambition meets opportunity.
