Poznań Invests in the Future of Zero-Emission Public Transport

Poznań, the capital of Greater Poland, is taking bold steps towards sustainability with its latest investment in zero-emission public transport. On 13 January 2025, MPK Poznań Sp. z o.o. signed an agreement with Solaris Bus & Coach to purchase 17 articulated Solaris Urbino 18 Electric buses. This move not only cements Poznań’s reputation as a leader in green urban mobility but also underscores its commitment to reducing air pollution and improving the quality of life for its residents.

Expanding the Electric Fleet

The newly signed agreement includes an initial order for nine battery-powered buses, with an option to expand the purchase by an additional eight, bringing the total to 17. These 18-metre-long buses are scheduled to hit Poznań’s streets by June 2026. As part of a larger strategy to modernise its public transport fleet, MPK Poznań already operates over 300 Solaris buses, including 58 electric and 25 hydrogen-powered vehicles. This significant investment highlights the city’s dedication to achieving climate neutrality and setting a benchmark for other urban centres.

Solaris Urbino 18 Electric: A Technological Marvel

The Solaris Urbino 18 Electric represents cutting-edge innovation in sustainable zero-emission public transport. Equipped with a robust 240 kW asynchronous central motor and state-of-the-art High Energy batteries, these buses offer excellent range and efficiency. The modular design allows key components to be mounted on the roof and rear of the bus, ensuring optimal passenger capacity and ease of maintenance.

Passengers can expect a quiet, comfortable ride, with air-conditioned interiors and modern amenities such as USB charging ports and Braille signage for improved accessibility. Each bus can accommodate at least 110 passengers, making them ideal for high-demand urban routes. Charging is equally advanced, with plug-in systems allowing buses to be recharged overnight or during scheduled breaks at depots.

Infrastructure to Support the Transition

To fully utilise the capabilities of its electric buses, Poznań is upgrading its charging infrastructure. New high-capacity chargers are being installed at depots and bus terminals across the city. These include both pantograph chargers and plug-in systems, allowing buses to recharge efficiently between routes or during off-peak hours. This infrastructure ensures seamless integration of electric buses into the existing public transport network, minimising disruption and maximising operational efficiency.

The Benefits of Zero-Emission Public Transport

The shift to zero-emission public transport brings multiple benefits to the city:

  • Cleaner Air: The electric buses produce no harmful emissions, significantly improving air quality and reducing health risks for residents.
  • Quieter Streets: Their silent operation helps decrease urban noise pollution, creating a more pleasant environment for both residents and visitors.
  • Cost Savings: Electric buses are more cost-effective in the long run, with lower maintenance and fuel costs compared to traditional diesel buses.
  • Improved Accessibility: Features such as low floors, spacious interiors, and Braille-enabled buttons make the buses accessible to all, including individuals with reduced mobility or parents with prams.

Funding and Collaboration

Poznań’s ambitious transport projects are supported by substantial funding. The recent bus acquisition is funded under the Zero-Emission Public Transport programme, administered by the National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management. Additionally, MPK Poznań has secured funding for 30 low-floor trams, further advancing the city’s commitment to sustainable mobility. The combined investment ensures that Poznań continues to lead by example in environmental stewardship and urban innovation.

Poznań’s Broader Green Initiatives

While zero-emission public transport is a key focus, Poznań’s environmental efforts extend beyond buses and trams. The city is actively “de-concreting” urban areas, replacing unused asphalt with green spaces that provide ecological and social benefits. Initiatives such as Social Forests aim to create urban green spaces that serve as recreational areas while also supporting biodiversity. These projects align with Poznań’s broader strategy to combat climate change and enhance the quality of urban life for its residents

The Importance of Sustainable Transport

Cities worldwide face increasing pressure to address climate change, and Poznań is rising to the challenge. Investing in sustainable transport not only reduces greenhouse gas emissions but also improves public health and fosters economic resilience. By modernising its zero-emission public transport system, Poznań ensures that residents and visitors have access to efficient, eco-friendly mobility options. These efforts demonstrate that sustainability and economic growth can go hand in hand, setting a powerful example for other urban centres.

Looking Ahead

Poznań’s investment in 17 new electric buses and 30 low-floor trams marks a significant milestone in its journey towards sustainable urban development. These modern vehicles will enhance the city’s public transport network, offering cleaner, quieter, and more comfortable travel for all. As Poznań continues to implement forward-thinking initiatives, it is setting a strong precedent for cities around the globe to prioritise sustainability, innovation, and the well-being of their residents.
