Goodbye Toll Booth Queues! The A2 Motorway Launches Videotolling

From Wednesday, 15 January 2025, a new chapter begins for drivers on the A2 motorway between Poznań and Konin. This significant change comes in the form of videotolling — a modern system for automatic toll collection. Promising faster journeys and greater convenience, this development aligns with Poland’s growing push towards efficient road infrastructure. Here’s what you need to know about the new system and its benefits.

What is Videotolling and How Does it Work?

Videotolling is a technology-driven toll collection method designed to simplify the process for drivers. It uses cameras installed at designated toll lanes to automatically read vehicle registration plates. The corresponding toll fee is then deducted from a pre-registered account, eliminating the need to stop at a booth or handle cash and cards.

To use this service, drivers must register their vehicles in the Autopay app and activate the videotolling feature. If you’ve used Autopay on other routes, simply enable the function for the A2 motorway. Once registered, drivers can pass through specially marked lanes, where cameras will handle the rest. These lanes are marked with a camera icon on an orange background, making them easy to identify.

Why Only the Poznań-Konin Section?

One might wonder why videotolling is being introduced only on a segment of the A2. The answer lies in the differing toll systems across the motorway.

The A2 motorway consists of two main sections: Świecko–Nowy Tomyśl and Nowy Tomyśl–Konin. The former operates under a closed toll system managed by the state, while the latter is governed by a concession agreement that includes a system of real-time tolling. This division in management structures makes it challenging to implement videotolling uniformly. For now, the service is available at toll plazas in Nagradowice (181 km), Słupca (228 km), and Lądek (238 km).

Benefits of Videotolling: A Driver’s Perspective

The new system brings numerous advantages for both individual drivers and companies managing vehicle fleets:

  • Time Savings: By removing the need to stop at toll booths, videotolling reduces travel time significantly, especially during peak hours.
  • Convenience: Once registered, payments are automated. Drivers don’t need to carry cash or cards or even have their phone at hand during travel.
  • Safety: Minimising stops on the motorway reduces the risk of accidents near toll plazas.
  • Eco-Friendly: Faster, uninterrupted journeys mean less idling and lower emissions.

For businesses, the system simplifies expense tracking and reduces the administrative burden of managing multiple toll receipts.

Free Sections and Compatibility with Traditional Payments

It’s worth noting that the bypass around Poznań, between the Poznań West and Poznań East interchanges, remains toll-free. Additionally, traditional payment methods — cash, cards, and fuel cards — are still available for those who prefer them. Drivers can simply avoid the videotolling lanes if they choose not to use the new system.

As part of this update, it’s important to note that the Poznań motorway bypass, between Poznań West and Poznań East, will remain toll-free.

said Rafał Popowski, traffic and toll collection manager at Autostrada Wielkopolska SA.

History of the A2 and its Evolution

The A2 motorway, known as the “Autostrada Wolności” (Highway of Freedom), is a critical east-west artery in Poland. It spans from the German border at Świecko to the Belarusian border at Kukuryki, connecting major urban centres such as Poznań, Łódź, and Warsaw.

Originally conceptualised as part of the Reichsautobahn network in the 1930s, the project was delayed by World War II and resumed in earnest in the late 20th century. Today, the A2 motorway represents a modern, well-maintained route for both local and international traffic.

In recent years, efforts have focused on modernising and expanding the A2. The introduction of videotolling is another step in making the motorway more efficient and aligned with contemporary standards.

How to Register for Videotolling

Getting started with videotolling is straightforward:

1. Download the Autopay App: Available on iOS and Android platforms, or access the service through participating bank apps.

2. Create an Account: Register with your personal details, vehicle registration number, and payment method.

3. Activate Videotolling: Enable the service for the A2 motorway within the app.

Once set up, you can enjoy automated toll payments on the designated sections of the A2.

Future Prospects and Expansion

While the current implementation of videotolling is limited to the Poznań–Konin stretch, discussions are underway to expand it to the entire 255 km section between Świecko and Konin. If successful, this would make travel even smoother across one of Poland’s busiest motorways. The service is already operational on other routes like the A1 and A4 motorways, and its adoption is expected to grow rapidly.

A Game-Changer for Polish Motorways

The introduction of videotolling marks a significant improvement in how drivers experience toll roads in Poland. It not only reduces travel time and stress but also aligns the country’s motorway infrastructure with global best practices. With over 2.5 million users already benefiting from Autopay on other roads, the A2 motorway’s adoption of videotolling is poised to make a big impact.

Whether you’re a daily commuter or an occasional traveller, this new system promises a more streamlined journey through Wielkopolska’s A2 motorway. Register today and be part of the revolution in Polish road travel!
