There is a particular kind of concentration involved in competitive yo-yo. A routine can look effortless from the audience, but behind the tricks are timing, repetition and plenty of practice.
That will be on display in Poznań this Saturday, 10th October, when MDK No. 1 hosts the Polish YoYo Nationals 2026.
The championship brings together Polish competitors across several yo-yo disciplines, with the main 1A competition deciding this year's Polish champion. There is also an international element, with the Open category available to competitors from outside Poland.
Spectators can attend the event free of charge, making it an accessible option for anyone curious to see what competitive yo-yo looks like in practice.
From younger competitors to experienced performers
The headline 1A competition has no age limit. Competitors will begin with one-minute preliminary routines, after which the top 10 will progress to a three-minute final.
Other categories give the competition a different character. The 1A Junior division is for competitors aged 16 and under who have not previously finished in the top three of the 1A Polish championship. At the other end of the experience scale, 1A Retro is reserved for performers with more than 10 years of yo-yo experience.
The X-Division covers four other styles, with Polish competitors choosing between 2A, 3A, 4A and 5A. International competitors entering the Open category can choose from those disciplines as well as 1A.
For anyone unfamiliar with competitive yo-yo, the different categories are worth watching. The disciplines can involve different numbers of yo-yos and significantly different approaches to performing tricks, making for a varied competition rather than a single format repeated throughout the day.
A free event at MDK No. 1
The event will be judged using a scoring system based on the rules of the IYYF World Yo-Yo Contest 2025. Judges assess both technical and artistic elements of each performance.
Online competitor registration closed on 3rd October, although the organisers have stated that registration is possible at the venue on the day, subject to the applicable on-site fee. This does not affect spectators, who can watch the championship free of charge.
Full rules and category information are available from the official PYYN website.
For Poznań, the championship offers a glimpse into a specialist community that does not often feature in the city's mainstream sporting calendar. It is also a chance to see how a familiar childhood toy has developed into a competitive discipline combining technical skill, choreography and performance.
The Polish YoYo Nationals 2026 take place at MDK No. 1 in Poznań on Saturday, 10th October, with spectators welcome to attend for free.
