Home, Hope, and Care in New Family Home for Children in Poznań

Poznań has introduced a heartwarming innovation to its foster care system: a new family home for children on Jugosłowiańska Street. This establishment, the first of its kind managed by a non-governmental organisation, stands as a symbol of hope for children needing a stable and nurturing environment. It is run by the Family Support Foundation “Niebieski Koralik,” (Blue Bead) which has been making strides in Wielkopolska’s foster care system since 2018.

A Vision of Care and Integration

The family home, now ready to welcome its young residents, epitomises the efforts of a collaborative community. “Niebieski Koralik” focuses on more than just providing shelter. The foundation works tirelessly to integrate foster families, maintain children’s connections with their biological parents, and support foster children transitioning into adulthood.

Jacek Jaśkowiak, the Mayor of Poznań, visited the facility and expressed deep gratitude.

Providing children with a true home is one of the most challenging but vital tasks we face,

he stated.

His words highlight the significance of finding compassionate and responsible individuals to care for these vulnerable children.

A Home Built with Love and Dedication

The family home has undergone a comprehensive renovation, creating a warm and welcoming space. The children will enjoy six bedrooms, a communal kitchen with a dining area, two bathrooms, and utility rooms. IKEA Poznań played a key role in furnishing the home, offering stylish and practical designs tailored for young residents.

Volunteers and organisations also contributed significantly. Representatives from the city of Poznań, the Foundation “Dziecko w Centrum,” and the Regional Social Policy Centre were among those involved. This collaboration underscores the shared commitment of local bodies and private entities to enhancing children’s welfare.

Providing Stability for Seven Young Residents

Initially, the home will host seven children, each receiving comprehensive care from a team of four educators led by an experienced director. A dedicated psychologist will ensure their emotional and mental well-being. This arrangement aims to replicate the comfort and security of a traditional family, offering a healing space for children who have experienced disruption in their lives.

Family homes like this one act as a transitional haven. They provide a nurturing environment until children can return to their biological families or reach independence. The homes also foster education, therapeutic interventions, and skill-building, essential for shaping the children’s futures.

The Importance of Foster Parents

Poznań faces a pressing need for foster parents. Currently, 370 foster families are registered in the city, caring for children who often remain under their protection until adulthood. The city has launched initiatives like the campaign “Help Children Through Tough Times. Become a Foster Parent” to inspire individuals and couples to join this noble cause.

Foster parents can be single individuals, married couples, or even seniors, provided they complete training at Poznań’s Family Support Centre “Swoboda.” This organisation ensures ongoing assistance for foster parents, from financial aid to emotional and professional support.

Incentives to Encourage Foster Families

Poznań offers a range of benefits to professional foster families, including medical packages worth up to 2,500 zł monthly and cultural or recreational packages valued at 1,000 zł. These resources help children explore their interests and engage in enriching activities.

Families also receive up to 500 zł monthly for training and individual or group support, with additional subsidies for housing costs. Beyond material support, a dedicated coordinator offers personalised guidance to foster parents, visiting regularly to address challenges and share practical advice.

Towards a Brighter Future

The establishment of the new family home is a testament to the power of collective action. The involvement of organisations like IKEA and countless volunteers reflects Poznań’s commitment to creating inclusive and supportive spaces for children in need.

The family home on Jugosłowiańska is a vital addition to Poznań’s foster care network, joining four other family homes that collectively care for 27 children. This fifth facility brings a fresh perspective by incorporating the resources and expertise of a non-governmental organisation.

As more children prepare to move into this haven, the city continues its search for compassionate foster parents willing to make a difference. Through strategic partnerships and community engagement, Poznań is paving the way for a brighter future for its youngest residents.
