Keeping Your Cool: How to Enjoy Poznań During This Week's Heatwave

The summer sunshine has certainly been making the most of its stay in Poznań. While many people are enjoying long evenings outdoors, the latest spell of hot, humid weather and thunderstorms is also bringing conditions that can quickly become uncomfortable and, for some, dangerous.

With temperatures remaining well above 30°C and humid conditions expected to continue for much of the week, staying cool is about more than comfort. It is about looking after yourself and those around you.

The good news is that Poznań is quite well equipped for hot weather. From its leafy parks and lakes to public drinking water points and cooling mist stations, there are plenty of ways to enjoy the city while avoiding the worst of the heat.

If there's one lesson locals know well, it's that this is not the week to rush from one attraction to another. Instead of packing your day with activities, take your time. Enjoy a long breakfast, spend the hottest part of the afternoon somewhere cool and save walks around the Old Town or the Warta riverside for later in the day.

As the evening arrives and temperatures begin to ease, Poznań comes back to life. Restaurants fill up, families return to parks and cyclists head out along the riverside paths, making it one of the best times to experience the city.

Let Nature Protect You

One of Poznań's greatest advantages during summer is its abundance of green space.

Parks such as Cytadela, Sołacki and Wilsona offer a welcome escape from the heat thanks to their mature trees and shaded paths. If you're looking for somewhere to read a book, enjoy a picnic or simply catch your breath, these quieter corners of the city can feel several degrees cooler than the surrounding streets.

The areas around Lake Malta and the River Warta also provide pleasant places for an evening stroll once the strongest sunshine has passed.

Keep a Bottle With You

Hydration is one of the simplest ways to stay comfortable during a heatwave, and carrying a reusable bottle can save both money and plastic waste.

Aquanet's network of public drinking fountains is available across many of Poznań's parks and busy public spaces, making it easy to top up throughout the day. The City of Poznań also provides an up-to-date list of drinking water points and cooling mist stations on its website, making it easy to plan ahead if you're spending the day outdoors.

Sometimes the Coolest Place Is Indoors

The middle of the day is the perfect opportunity to explore one of Poznań's museums, browse independent shops, enjoy lunch in an air-conditioned café or take a leisurely break inside one of the city's shopping centres before heading back outdoors later.

Slowing the pace doesn't mean missing out. It often makes the day far more enjoyable.

When the temperature rises, it can be tempting to splash around in one of the decorative fountains dotted across the city centre. However, these are not designed for bathing and the water is not intended for direct contact.

If swimming is on your agenda, choose one of Poznań's official bathing areas or public pools instead, where water quality is monitored and lifeguards are on duty during opening hours.

Just as importantly, avoid jumping straight into cold water after prolonged sunbathing or strenuous exercise, and never combine swimming with alcohol.

Listen to Your Body

Heat affects everyone differently.

Feeling more tired than usual, struggling to concentrate or developing a headache are all signs that your body may need water, shade or a chance to cool down.

More serious symptoms such as dizziness, confusion, nausea or a high temperature should never be ignored. Move into a cooler place, drink water if possible and seek medical assistance if symptoms worsen or someone appears seriously unwell.

If you're taking regular medication or have an existing health condition, it's also worth checking whether hot weather could affect your treatment or hydration.

Don't Forget Those Who Need a Little Extra Help

Heatwaves can be especially challenging for older adults, young children, pregnant women and people living with long-term health conditions.

Checking in on an elderly neighbour, reminding a relative to drink plenty of water or helping someone carry their shopping during the hottest part of the day are small gestures that can make a real difference.

The same applies to pets. Make sure they always have access to fresh water and shade, walk dogs early in the morning or later in the evening and never leave an animal inside a parked vehicle, even for a few minutes.

Home Can Be Your Coolest Escape

Keeping your home comfortable doesn't always require air conditioning.

Closing curtains or blinds on sun-facing windows during the day helps keep rooms cooler, while opening windows early in the morning and again after sunset allows cooler air to circulate.

Choosing lighter meals, avoiding unnecessary use of ovens and wearing loose, breathable clothing can also help you stay comfortable throughout the day.

Enjoy the Sunshine Safely

There is plenty to love about summer in Poznań. Long evenings by the river, outdoor concerts, café terraces and walks through the city's parks are all part of what makes this season so enjoyable.

The key is knowing when to embrace the sunshine and when to step out of it.

Take regular breaks, drink water before you feel thirsty, seek shade whenever possible and don't be afraid to slow your pace. After all, summer in Poznań isn't about ticking off a list of attractions. Sometimes it's about finding a quiet bench beneath the trees, enjoying an ice cream by the Warta and waiting for the city to come alive again as the sun begins to set.
