Poznań is restoring another 100 public wells across the city, giving residents additional access to water for household and other practical uses if the mains supply is interrupted.
The wells are spread across different parts of Poznań, including housing estates, areas around schools, playgrounds and other public spaces regularly used by residents.
The latest programme follows the restoration of 50 wells last year. Once the current work is completed, 150 such points will have been brought back into service through the two stages of the programme.
The wells are relatively shallow, traditionally fitted with hand-operated pumps. Most of the locations included in the current work have drilled hand pumps, although the wider list also contains dug-drilled and dug wells.
Extra water points around Poznań
The city says the distribution of the wells across Poznań is intended to provide access to water in a number of neighbourhoods rather than concentrating emergency provision in a small number of locations.
The water from these wells is for household and practical purposes only, not for drinking. Their role is particularly relevant if there is a temporary interruption to the municipal water supply, when residents may need an alternative source for everyday needs.
For people living on housing estates or close to the schools and playgrounds where some of the wells are located, having a functioning local pump could provide an additional option during a disruption.
Three facilities will prepare drinking water for distribution
The city is also working with Aquanet on a separate measure focused specifically on drinking water.
Funding will be used to purchase three machines capable of filling and packaging potable water. The equipment is planned for installation at three independent water treatment stations.
The machines are intended for use if a failure affects the water network, a water intake or a treatment facility. Water suitable for drinking could then be prepared in individual portions for distribution to residents.
Packaging the water in manageable quantities would also make it easier to transport and distribute supplies where they are needed.
50 buildings being prepared for wider community use
Poznań is also assessing and preparing 50 municipal and public buildings for potential use by residents during periods when normal city services are disrupted.
The list includes schools, healthcare facilities, residential social care homes, council housing and university buildings.
Taken together, the measures cover several basic services that residents rely on every day: water, electricity, public buildings and the ability to distribute essential supplies.
