Springtime Joy: Maltanka Train Takes Off Again!

Spring has sprung in Poznań, and with it comes the exciting reopening of the beloved Maltanka Park Railway!

Starting this Sunday, April 7th, and continuing on Saturdays and Sundays throughout the month, locals and visitors alike can hop aboard the charming train for a delightful journey through the city’s scenic routes.

Historic Treasures on Tracks

For over 50 years, the Maltanka Park Railway has been a cherished attraction for Poznań residents and tourists, offering a unique way to travel from the Śródka roundabout to the New Zoo. As one of the last remaining narrow-gauge railways in Poland, with a track width of 600 mm, Maltanka captures the hearts of railway enthusiasts with its historic rolling stock.

One of the highlights of the Maltanka experience is its historic rolling stock, which adds a touch of nostalgia to every ride. From the iconic “Ryjek” motor wagon dating back to 1932 to the charming “Kowbojka” carriage believed to have been produced around 1912, passengers are treated to a journey through time aboard these vintage gems.

Scenic Routes and Landmarks

As the train chugs along its picturesque route, passengers are treated to panoramic views of Poznań’s landmarks and attractions. With stations including Maltanka, Ptyś, Balbinka, and Zwierzyniec, riders can conveniently explore destinations such as the Malta Thermal Baths and the New Zoo while enjoying the tranquil beauty of Lake Malta.

Get to Know All of The Maltanka Stops

Situated on the northwest shore of Lake Malta in Poznań, Maltanka Station offers passengers a picturesque starting point for their rail adventure. Initially adorned with a metal shelter, the station’s charming timber-framed building, constructed in the traditional Prussian style, was introduced in 1998, complete with amenities such as ticket counters and a restaurant. Boasting two platforms—one for boarding and one for alighting—the station also features a historic locomotive and a locomotive shed nearby, adding to its allure.

Ptyś Stop, nestled along the northern shore of Lake Malta, was originally designed to serve guests of a nearby hotel. After a period of closure, the stop was relocated closer to the entrance of Malta Thermal Baths in 2012, where it now caters to visitors of the resort. Its name, derived from the character “Ptyś” in a popular 1950s and 60s children’s storybook, was chosen by readers of Express Poznański, adding a touch of whimsy to this lakeside destination.

Balbinka Stop serves as both a stop and a passing loop along the northern edge of Lake Malta, near the end of Wileńska Street. Named after the character “Balbinka” from a beloved 1950s and 60s children’s tale, this stop, with its two tracks and platforms, allows trains travelling in opposite directions to safely pass each other. The automatic switches and signals ensure smooth operations, maintaining the efficiency of the railway.

Located near the main entrance of the New Zoo, Zwierzyniec Station welcomes visitors with its dual platforms and a siding track. Originally featuring a wooden kiosk for ticket sales, the station was modernised with a spacious glass pavilion in 1975, only to be tragically destroyed by fire in 2000. Today, a temporary ticket booth and control room reside under the preserved canopy of the former pavilion, ensuring continued service to zoo visitors while preserving the station’s heritage.
