The Perseid Meteor Shower: Witness One of Summer’s Greatest Sky Shows Near Poznań

Every August, one of nature’s most impressive displays lights up the night sky as the Perseid meteor shower reaches its annual peak. Known in Poland as Noc Perseidów, the event attracts everyone from experienced astrophotographers to families hoping to catch a glimpse of a shooting star.

What Are the Perseids?

The Perseids occur each year as Earth passes through the trail of dust and debris left behind by Comet Swift-Tuttle. As these tiny particles enter Earth’s atmosphere at high speed, they burn up, creating the bright streaks commonly known as shooting stars.

Under ideal conditions, observers may see up to 100 meteors per hour during the peak, although numbers will vary depending on local weather and light pollution.

The best viewing time is from around 11.00 pm until dawn, with activity usually increasing after midnight.

Morasko Nature Reserve

Located on the northern edge of Poznań, Morasko offers one of the darkest locations within the city limits. The surrounding woodland and open clearings provide a much better view of the night sky than the city centre, making it an excellent option for those without a long journey.

Jezioro Kierskie

The shores of Lake Kierskie are popular with local photographers thanks to their wide, open views of the sky. Choosing a quieter section of the lakeside away from street lighting can provide excellent conditions for watching the meteor shower.

Ostoja Ciemnego Nieba Chalin

Around an hour’s drive west of Poznań, Chalin is one of Greater Poland’s recognised dark sky areas. Created to protect naturally dark skies, it is regularly used for astronomical observations and offers some of the region’s best conditions for viewing meteor showers and the Milky Way.

Powidz Landscape Park

For those prepared to travel a little further, Powidz Landscape Park offers some of the darkest skies in Wielkopolska. The combination of lakes, forests and minimal light pollution makes it one of the finest places in the region to experience the Perseids at their best.

Tips for a Successful Evening

Don’t worry, you don’t need special equipment or a telescope to enjoy the Perseids. In fact, the wider your view of the sky, the better.

Before heading out, remember to:

• Check the weather forecast for clear skies.
• Choose a location away from artificial lighting.
• Allow at least 20 minutes for your eyes to adjust to the darkness.
• Bring a blanket or reclining chair.
• Pack warm clothing, as August nights in Poland can become surprisingly cool.
• Avoid looking at mobile phone screens, as bright light reduces your night vision.
