Poznań’s Malta Lake will have a particularly international feel at the end of August, when athletes from more than 90 countries arrive in the city for the World Canoe Sprint and Paracanoe Championships.
The championships take place from 26 to 30 August, bringing Olympic medallists, world champions and leading athletes from across Europe and beyond to the Malta Regatta Course.
The event is not just about watching the racing. The competition will also bring a free Fan Zone to the lake, giving families and visitors the chance to try some watersports themselves and enjoy the atmosphere around the championships.
Malta gets ready for five days of international racing
Anyone familiar with Malta Lake will know that the Regatta Course is already one of the city's most recognisable sporting venues. The lake has long been associated with rowing and canoeing, while the surrounding area is one of Poznań's favourite places for walking, cycling and spending time outdoors.
At the end of August, the focus will shift firmly towards the water.
Competitors from more than 90 countries are expected in Poznań, including representatives of established canoeing nations such as Australia, Canada and Hungary. The starting line will also feature athletes from countries including Peru, Samoa, Saudi Arabia, Capo Verde and Angola.
Among them will be Olympic medallists and current world and European champions, making this an opportunity for Poznań residents to watch athletes who are normally seen competing at major international championships.

The championships will be accompanied by a free Fan Zone at the start of the Malta Regatta Course, on the side facing ul. Jana Pawła II.
It will be open from 27 to 30 August between 11:00 and 16:00, with activities aimed at people who want to try the watersports themselves rather than simply watch from the sidelines.
Visitors will be able to have a go at SUP, recreational kayaking, dragon boats and kayak polo. There will also be demonstrations of whitewater and extreme kayaking, with qualified instructors running activities.
For families, the programme includes inflatables, obstacle courses, competitions and sporting games for children. The Fan Zone is also intended as somewhere to stay for a while rather than simply pass through. There will be deckchairs, a stage, music, spectator competitions and meetings with championship participants, alongside entertainment from a presenter and DJ.
A different side of Malta at the end of August
For many Poznań residents, Malta is part of everyday city life. People come here to run, cycle, walk around the lake, take the children out or simply sit by the water on a summer afternoon.
The championships will give the area a rather different atmosphere for a few days. International teams and supporters will be arriving in the city, while the racing will bring activity to a venue that is already closely connected with Poznań's sporting identity. Visitors who have never been to Malta before will also get to experience one of the city's most popular recreational areas at a particularly busy time.
The location makes the championships relatively easy to combine with the rest of a day in Poznań. A visit to the races or Fan Zone can sit alongside a walk around the lake, a trip into the city centre or other attractions in the Malta area.
For international visitors, it is also an unusually direct way to see a part of Poznań that residents use as an everyday leisure space.
World champions on the doorstep
Major international sporting events can sometimes feel detached from ordinary city life. The Malta championships should be different because so much of the programme will be accessible to the public.
You can watch elite racing on the water, then move over to the Fan Zone and try a canoe or SUP yourself. Children can take part in activities while more experienced paddlers demonstrate the sport at its more demanding end.
That combination feels particularly suited to Malta. The lake has always been a place where competitive sport and everyday recreation exist side by side.
